The Bad Boys (and girls) of the Outworld come home!!

Mortal Kombat 3 has finally hit home, and although it is a carbon copy of the arcade, the arcade game wasn't what it should have been. I know that you're probably thinking that I'm going to whine and complain about the boring and unoriginal arcade game, but I'm not. I'm going to do the best I can to compare the PSX version of MK3 to all games for the PSX and other equal systems using our ratings system.
Let's start off on a good note. The graphics are nothing short of spectacular, with all character sprites and most animation making a faithful leap from the arcade. However, I do have one major animation gripe, which happens to be Sheeva's win pose. When you choose Sheeva from the Character Select Screen, her animation is nice and smooth. However, when you win a round with her, she does a herky-jerky animation which looks ridiculous. Another big gripe is are the fatalities and animalities, which look pitifully awful. For the most part, though, MK's graphics are on the money.
Next comes sound. Now, I don't usually consider sound a large portion of my overall opinion of a game, because it is obtrusive at best, with the exception of breaking bones in Tekken. The sounds in MK3 are decent, with minor deductions for 'Round 1'. The screams of agony were faithfully reproduced, but the music is nothing special.
Now comes the fun part. O-R-I-G-I-N-A-L-I-T-Y. Gee, what a ridiculous concept...actually make a game that is different from other games on the market. This is the major weak point of MK3. I could go on and on, saying how I really don't want to see any more body explosion fatalities or palette-swapped characters. How about some new special moves, or even some new hidden characters? This is all absent from MK3. Liu Kang and Kung Lao have no new moves from MK2. The only new additions to MK3 were the in-close kombos, which are a stupid concept, since they require no skill to pull off, and each person has only one in-close kombo. Overall, MK3 is a pathetic clone of MK2.
In terms of play control, MK3's is second to none. Every button press produces the desired response, and the finishing moves are easy (maybe too easy) to pull off. The major control problem has to be Shang's morphs, which slow down so much that the flow of the match is totally interrupted.
In the FunFactor department, MK3 is average. It is fun to play, but not to the extent of other great fighters. The fatalities and gore just don't make up for the lack of gameplay on this disc.

And now for the grades....
