Can it get more realistic?!!


     Quite possibly the best all around sports title for the PlayStation, NBA Shootout is unbelievable in its realistic depiction of the NBA. Awesome graphics, sound effects, and gameplay make you feel like an NBA superstar.
     Using NBA Shootout's default camera angle, the graphics aren't too great. When changed to the action camera, however, they become the best I've ever seen. Unbelievable dunking, passing, and shooting animations are true to life in every way. Also accurately produced are the falling animations of a player who is fouled or just kindly shoved to the floor, sometimes by their own teammate as they're driving to the hoop. Setting picks, which was always dreamed of in basketball games, finally becomes a reality with the awesome depiction of pick-setting in this game. Characters actually stand still with their arms at their sides. It's totally amazing.
     Nice commentary adds to the action, and the dribble of the ball and squeaking of sneakers are superb sound effects. The crowd cheering "Defense!" can really rally a player who is falling behind.
     In terms of basketball authenticity, this one is as good as it gets. Great lengths were taken to produce games that could have been seen on TV. Play calling also adds something to this game which is lacking from all the others.
     As in real basketball games, refs sometimes make calls that you don't like. This happens mostly when you go up for dunks, because offensive fouls are always called. Once you learn the intuitive controls, however, you soon learn how to avoid the wrath of the referee. These awesome elements of realism make the gameplay unbeatable.
     NBA Shootout is at this point the best basketball game for the PlayStation. If anyone can improve on this one, we'd be in Virtual Reality, controlling the real players with our movements. Buy this game, you won't regret it!
