According to Gamefan Magazine,
Sources from Square LA, the FFVII team is already in stages of putting the finishing touches on the upcoming Final Fantasy VIII in Hawaii. Although, it's only had been done only four months. And, it is now undergoing bug testing and translation of the text for the US version. This left only the exact release date which is still unknown. It could possibly around summer 1998, as the earlier info, the FFVIII will be release almost the same time as Dragon Quest VII.
Another thing, it would seem that Square will launch FFVIII in Japan and the US simultaneously. Also, the sources also stated that Final Fantasy IX is already undergoing preliminary design. But, it is still a mystery because it is going to be which platforms? For PS or PS2?
