Water Offense
Few, if any, are there any good water maps for Red
Alert. There are a few that came with the game, but with all the bridges
and such you don't need to make any boats at all; just tanks. However,
there are many maps that involve good water tactics of both players instead
of Let-Us-See-Who-Has-The-Most-Tanks method. These few water maps will
have fierce water battles.
Soviets got the short straw on naval units. Soviet subs take a little while to build, and are only useful against OTHER naval units. Subs suck since you can't fire at any thing that is not IN the water. Transports are pretty cool for Soviets with their big tanks so they need subs only to defend them against allied boats and other subs. The water offense is really limited on the Soviet side. Soviets should concentrate on tanks and other units and not subs, since the effectiveness of subs is practically nothing.
Subs are pretty stupid at times. Overall, they work best in small groups of three to four. When you have a large group of subs, you'll have a hard time controlling them during the attack. Also, upon attacking a couple of subs will surface to attack while the others are still slowly inching their way to the battle scene. By the time they get their, the subs in the front of the crowd are all destroyed.
The Allies have a nice choosing of naval units to pick from. Gunboats don't seem to be that useful, unless you're testing the water for submarines or merely exploring. But to attack effectively with ANY boat but you need to make pleny of them. Yes, a gunboat isn't threatning but twenty of the coming at you does. Think of gunboats as the infantry of the seas.
Destroyers on the other hand are pretty nifty. They have good firing range (can destroy air vehicles as well) and can attack landtargets fairly well. But when it comes fending off a group of subs, the destroyers might need some help. Gunboats with destroyers do a good job of destroying submarine infested waters.
Now cruisers are the coolest naval units. Build three or four of these babies and have them make their way to enemy shore, providing that you have gunboats and destroyers to defend them. Upon getting at the shore your cruisers' guns will come blaring to life as they pound away at the enemy's buildings. As impressive the firepower of the guns, they sure are not accurate. Try aiming 'near' your target to get the bull's eye hit.
One of the best things to do with a cronoshift is to transport a cruiser. In really funny when the map is basically land and your enemy has a base inland around a small lake. Heh heh. A cruiser right in the lake will hurt him pretty severely. However, a cruiser by itself will not do that much harm. The smart player will send planes or his subs/boats after it. You also may not want to consider doing this since cruisers are so expensive. The key to controlling the seas is just like in Warcraft 2: just make a ton of boats.
