Dead End, New Clue

The following was posted yesterday on the Gabriel Knight message board:

Apparently, the magical on/off switch that we were alluding to may not have made it into the shipping product... which means, I'd have to tell you exactly how to access the eggs, making it not much of a hunt.

The good thing is that the clue still sort of applies, just to a different egg... Let me revise the clue.... Xx on C

GK3 Demo

The GK3 demo is now available at ftp://ftp.sierra.com/pub/pc/demos/Gabe3Dem.exe. It's 55.9 M, but well worth it. You get to play the entire Day 2: 12pm - 2pm timeblock. This is one of Grace's timeblocks, where you explore Château de Serres, a local winery. The game's graphic novel introduction is included with the demo in pdf format, and there's a brief intro to the demo to fill you in on where you are in the game. One thing worth noting, although you are able to get 38 points during this block in the actual game, you can only get 36 points in the demo since you are lacking a key inventory item. This demo should be a good chance to try out the new camera and interface, and play with the various graphic options, besides solving some of the new puzzles inspired by the 3D world.

Reviews of GK3

Numerous publications have reviewed GK3 and the opinions range from above average to outstanding. A full list of reviews can be found in the GK3 Links section. Here's a sampling:

"...what has truly set the Gabriel Knight games a cut above the rest (and this latest installment is no exception) is their adherence to high standards of storytelling and their inherent faith in the intelligence of the player. Gabriel Knight 3 features a wide array of rich characterization and puzzle solving that is sure to capture the imaginations of many would-be virtual detectives." --- Happy Puppy

"An excellent and fun game that proves that the pure adventure game is alive and well... If you're a die-hard fan of classic adventure -- and if you like your games loaded with complex story lines, tough puzzles, an excellent soundtrack, quirky characters, and snappy dialogue -- then you will love the third installment in the Gabriel Knight saga." --- Gamecenter

"I've just finished playing the best adventure game that's ever graced my hard drive, and I'm still reeling from the experience almost a day later... This is a game that makes you contemplate the 'meaning of life', and all those other trite phrases that most aptly describe what you think about... when the lights are out... just before you fall asleep..." --- Games Domain

"With the new addition to the Gabriel Knight series, Jane Jensen has, in my utmost opinion, saved the mystery/adventure genre. I do not like playing these types of games, but this game has made me so addictive that I am now trying to seek counseling for my problem... All in all, I say this was the best game I’ve played all year." --- Exxtreme3D.com

Easter Egg Hunt

Easter eggs are special events put into games by sneaky programmers and are usually triggered either accidentally or by some devious combination of keys and mouse clicks. GK3 has a number of semi-obvious eggs, but there are several eggs that are controlled by a particular on/off switch. Once the switch is applied, a new icon appears in the verb chooser. The fun part is trying to find the switch. GK3 Artist Flip Normals (animator of the intro AVI, the vision AVIs at the crime scene, the last AVI where Gabriel returns to the hotel, the end credits, and many of the in-game animations such as Gabriel putting the coat in his pocket) has been dropping hints on the Gabriel Knight message board about the trigger for the Easter eggs. The hints so far:

  • plant

  • X

  • X x on X
    Ignore "x"

A few people discovered that you can detach the camera from the landscape at L'hermitage by zooming straight up from the X that Grace marks in the dirt. This is a neat effect, but it is uncertain whether this is related to the switch for turning on the Easter eggs. And so the search continues...

And for anyone who remembers, Flip Normals was the Bill Cosby impersonator. :-)
