Gaetulan Revanche

from  Birth of the Vandal Empire, Bk II "Huneric the Founder"

Following is Prince Majnid speech to his people, on celebrating the most recent victory of his army at Sallej.

Alleluïa! Alleluïa! God is with us, for he gave us a great victory upon our foes! It is proof that our main effort shall be in uniting and keeping the True Faith! But lest everyone know how such great deeds were done by our greatest general, the well known Admiral Driss, and how decisevely general Ahmaz fought altogether against the evil King Mahjoub of Mauria, curse his name seventh times!!!

The ennemy was closing south of Sallej as the sun was already low in the sky, and soon it would disappear, finishing an otherly pleasant fine day. As we knew of him, we have all the infantry either keeping the baggage safe in Sallej, and these were the men of Driss, or set up in ambush in the brush south of the little hill near the town, and those were the warriors of Ahmaz, and ahmaz himself, who also commanded the city levies whom he hide in the above hill. And in the outer brush near the river, he set his camel, with his cavalry between that and the city. North of the city was the cavalry of Driss, who commanded them. A few men were left to counter any eastern passage, with the help of the men in the city.

The Maurian set their camp near the river, and they deployed in front of them, a great host, of many men, many many thousands of men. Innumerable. And they had javelinmen on their right and their chief, with his cavalry on their right. Opposite to their King was a big number of camel-riders, who would advance towards the brush. Then, in front of Salej, was the cunning Tashfin and his horses, followed by his own javelinmen. His camels were on his left, decided to explore the dunes.

Before they draw close, our forces took the initiative. The levies take a strong position on the hill and most of Ahmaz cavalry rushed toward his commander, while Driss finished to secure the western path of Sallej, and began coming forth himself. The ennemy then discovered noone in the dune and the mighty men of Ahmaz in the brush. These did not rush all at once, but Driss took the occasion to make profit of the hole between the two army to ghet deep in their line. Not too deep, for his rearguard would be caught by Mahjoub, and a long fight would follow between Mahjoub's fighter and that rearguard, being mostly inconclusive befre the end of the battle. For such is the courage of our warriors.

Then the men of Ahmaz rushed forward when a few cavalry join them. The ennemy cavel should have pactised with the devil, for they show quite an astonishing resistance, repulsing our men, and killing a few of them. But now the cavalry of Driss closed up and thus began a great slaughtering of those dark men, and Driss himself and alone slaughtering the support infantry to prevent any nasty flanking. which had the evil King Tashfin come forth to support them. He was successfull in his first strike, for he summoned all his men and all the dark spirits he could think of; But Ahmaz who had called his camels to join in the battle a little earlier has now  is mounted warrior greatly flanking the ennemy light cavalry and slaying them with a great effieciency directly related to their skill and courage.

So great was their dismay, and so cowards they are, that the Maurian forces disrupted and soon began to flee, and with them the men of Tashfin, who did only disrupt a few men of our light cavalry. The sun was down for an hour, and the battle just over when the shining moon would have been the only available light. But the speed of the camels and light horse of Driss and Ahmaz would surely dispose of the hordes of Maurian, who were very close to the foreguard of Driss and Driss himself, who slew many a warrior, just as Ahmaz.

True and Mighty are those two heroes and tre and mighty also are all of our warriors, living or slain, and God save the King Benyounes!
