The Grammar Translation Method:


One of the most widely practiced methods up until the 1940s. Some version of this method has been applied by language teachers for centuries: indeed, it has its antecedents in the teaching of the classical languages, Roman and Greek.

Two of the most common criticisms of the Grammar-Translation Method are:

(1) Tedium

(2) Students attain only limited oral proficiency.
