Kairiss

I need to know that you will always be
The same old someone that I knew
What will it take 'till you believe in me
The way that I believe in you.

Not too tall, but definitely not short, Kairiss stands a good Kairiss six feet tall. His build is fairly muscular, is face well-tanned from spending a few turns under Rukbat's glow at No Weyr. Dramatic, finely-chiseled features with a mischevious grin, and equally mischevious sapphire eyes make for an awfully good-looking man. That crooked grin often worn on his face reflects his twisted sense of humor, just as the occasional warm smile shows his kindhearted nature... Those blue eyes shine with youth, but Kai still appears to be 24 Turns, 7 months, and 15 days old. He wears black rough spun pants, a loose, plain white tunic, and wherry-hide boots, dyed to match his trousers. The badge on his shoulder is that of a Senior Apprentice Vintnercrafter, the newer knot beside it is the royal blue, green, and black of a No Weyr Resident.

Born in Telgar Weyr to two blueriders, Kairiss had a reasonably happy, normal childhood. He was the oldest child of Aureinia and K'ren who had another son when Kai reached his fourth turn. And another turn after Kaetyn was born, a girl, Jarra, followed. Kai loved being an older brother. He was devoted and protective of his younger siblings almost to a fault... And when a healer told his family that the three-turn-old Jarra was born with a weak heart, Kairiss became even more protective of his baby sister, spending more time with her than even his parents did...In a way, he became a second father to her. So it was that much more painful when the girl died at only nine turns of age. Kairiss never forgets those he loves, but he managed to put his sister's death behind him, and keep a good-humored outlook.

Even as a child Kairiss had a love of wine that far surpassed that of a normal person... So, as soon as he was of age, he joined the Vintnercraft as a Junior Apprentice. For just over a turn, he was completely devoted to his studies and his craft... Until one of the Junior Golds at Telgar rose in flight, was caught, and later - clutched. Only a sevenday after the clutching, his father's blue Synneth had searched young Kaetyn. Kai was happy for his younger brother, but none of the other candidates were of any interest to him... Until he met a pretty girl named Kadya, who had been searched from Tillek Hold. Kadya was the same age as Kairiss - sixteen turns, and the two also shared similar interests. They both enjoyed the same flavors of wine, the same Harper ballads... The short, spunky girl with a cheery demeanor who /always/ got her way had not only caught Kai's eye, but captured his heart, as well. The night before the eggs on the sands were to hatch, Kai and Kadya went for a walk, as always, and once they were alone, he confessed his feelings to her... She only smiled and walked off. Kairiss didn't see her again until a lithe green dragonet stumbled her way the next day and announced that she was Allath. And not to long after that, Kaetyn became K'tyn, bronze Syth's. The next day Kairiss waited in the Weyrling's Yard for Kadya, and when she and her green Allath finally came out of the barracks, Kadya admitted she had feelings for him, too, but she only had time for her lifemate...

After almost a turn and a half of waiting, Kadya and her clutchmates graduated from Weyrlinghood. After she received her wingrider's knot, Kairiss asked if Kadya had room in her life for someone other than Allath... And /finally/ she laughed and admitted that the past turn had been awful without his company, and she asked him to be her Weyrmate... Of course, before Kai had a chance to move in, Kadya started acting strangely, avoiding him whenever possible, and being nasty to him the other times. A few days later, Allath rose to mate, and was caught by none other than bronze Syth. Kairiss was crushed. He avoided both his younger brother, and that greenrider, until she cornered in the lower cavern one day. After explaining that the results of the flight had meant nothing to her, she gave him a gift...A bright blue stone that hung from a black cord. "Allath shares my mind and my soul... But this -- my heart, belongs to you." They were weyrmated later that day. The couple lived happily for several turns. Kadya had been made a wingleader at the Weyr, and Kairiss was promoted to Senior Apprentice. Their happiness was to be short-lived, though, for when the two were in their twenty-second turns, Kadya became ill... She had contracted firehead, the healers believed, and she died a few sevendays later, Allath going ::between:: barely a moment after the greenrider had heaved her last sigh.

Kairiss was devastated by her loss, but managed to survive the tragedy. He left Telgar, the only place on Pern he'd ever been, and decided to travel. He visited almost every Weyr on the western half of the main continent before finally deciding to settle down again a turn later. He traveled to the Western Isles and became quite taken with No Weyr's tropical climate and friendly folk... Recently, though, Kairiss visited Who Knows Weyr, delivering some of No's newest vintage... And a pretty young woman by the name of Elenna caught his eye. After spending only one evening with her, Kai developed a serious interest in the Baker, and has since visited her several times. Eventually, he realized his feelings for her, and expressed them... And after very little poking and prodding managed to get Elenna to admit hers, as well...
