Hotaru is the only daughter of Professor Tomoe. After an accident, the Professor and Hotaru were hurt. To save Hotaru from death, Professor Hotaru had to let a monster inside his body and take it over. Accepting the offer, Hotaru lived and the Professor began to make monsters, as the monster inside him wanted, to find the three talismans to make the holy grail. During the events of Sailor Moon S, it turns out Hotaru, as grown-up, is the dark messiah, aka Mistress Nine. After discovering that she is Sailor Saturn, Hotaru went in and tried to stop Pharaoh 90. Super Sailor Moon followed Hotaru in to save her from Pharaoh 90 and ended up turning her into a baby. Now starting a new life, Hotaru is under the care of her adopted parents Michiru and Haruka.
