This story is dedicated to Mirialdo san. Someday, I hope you and Noin will be able to see the ocean...
She sits on the wet sand, feeling the gentle breeze blow through her short hair, the cool gust rustling her loose yellow dress. The bright afternoon sun beats down on the back of her neck, and she feels it start to burn, but chooses not to pay attention. Instead, she concentrates on the rolling waves before her, on the sensation of the water lapping at her bare feet. She closes her eyes, blocking out the sun and the sand, letting the sounds of the ocean fill her mind. Hearing nothing but the wind, the cry of the gulls above her, and the quiet music of the waves...
I can feel him. She sighs softly, tracing a pattern in the sand with her index finger. When she opens her eyes again, she laughs at the small heart she has drawn. How silly...
She finds herself staring at the water again, lost in its calmness, its beauty. Serene. She sighs again, remembering why she had come. I had tried so hard to forget him...but I can’t. I want to let go, but my heart won’t let me... She hugs her knees to her chest, letting the ocean swallow her up. He would’ve wanted to be here...before...
The sun is stronger now, suddenly painful on her neck, her shoulders. Shaking herself back into reality, she rises, preparing to leave. I shouldn’t have come. But as she turns around, a soft touch on her sunburned shoulder halts her. She lets out a faint gasp, recognizing the man who has so silently approached her. No...it can’t be...
He is standing next to her, smiling faintly, the wind tousling his long, flaxen hair. Their eyes lock, and she finds herself lost in the ocean once more. His hand brushes her face, returning her to reality, and she realizes that he is holding something in his other hand. A paper boat, tiny and fragile.
She tries to speak, but something stops her. He smiles at her once more, then walks to the water’s edge, kneeling in the wet sand. He gestures for her to come closer, guiding her gently to his side, placing her shaking hand on the boat. Their two hands almost touching, she looks into his eyes and manages a small smile. Then, at the same time, they release the boat into the ocean, watching it sail away.
