Big Brawl; 1980 USThe Big Brawl was Jackie Chan's first attempt to reach Hollywood. In this action-comedy (more comedy than action) Jackie is Jerry Kwan, a Chinese immigrant who has to protect grandfather's restaurant from local gangsters. When the gang boss kidnaps his brother's fiancée and blackmails Jackie is forced to fight in a bareknuckle boxing competition in Texas. Finally Jackie has to fight his opponents in competition and some Chicago gangsters as well.Despite training in martial arts since the age of six, and having choreographed his own fight scenes in many previous films, Jackie Chan was assigned a fight choreographer with only six years experience. Jackie Chan was already number one box office star at that time bu in US he was really unknown. What he really wanted was a great, amazing film not a boring, not really funny action comedy without any good action. Film was a total failure in US nox office but did quite well in international video distribution. However Jackie was happy he made this film, he learned how difficult it would be to break through in US, studios having so tight control over every aspect on film. And what was most important to Jackie he did learn to roller-skate, skateboard and ski barefoot. He really used all of these skill in his later films.
Director Robert Clouse: In many ways, Jackie was a better actor (than Bruce Lee). He was very good acrobat and a good martial artist, plus, he could handle humor beautifully. His look on screen was very much a joke-a-minute existence. It was softer. It wasn't hard like Lee. Jackie did not break through (with Big Brawl), but we absolutely thought he would.
