The Young Master; 1980 HK

THE ULTIMATE JACKIE CHAN FILM

Young Master, Jackie's first film for Raymond Chow's Golden Harvest under a new contract which allowed Jacie make his own films from now on, is a second movie in his countryside trilogy, the first was Fearless Hyena. In 1980 Jackie Chan broke every box office record ever set in Hong Kong history, even surpassing the late Bruce Lee with his action blockbuster Young Master. Chan directs and choreographs as well as stars in this unconventional martial arts movie Dragon (Chan) is the younger of 2 orphans, the elder, Tiger, has gone astray and defected to a rival Kung Fu school who are using his skills for evil means, and ends up being framed by them. Dragon has the task of clearing his brother's name, and by using his wits and incredible fighting skills, he succeeds. If there was a film to show Jackie Chan's talents, Young Master would be close to the definitive Chan film. Not only is his natural flair for comedy on full display but also his masterly direction of action. Fans, pipes, skirts, swords, stools and staffs are just some of the weapons Chan wields in the film plus manic stunts and mighty kicks of thunderfoot. Young Master is a milestone in martial arts movie making and there has been nothing like it since.
Toby Russell -Eastern Heroes

Young Master was the star for Jackie as producer. Young Master was the second part in his countryside trilogy. Other two were Fearless Hyena and Dragon Lord. All these films are independent but in all of them has the same theme and Jackie's characters are very similar. Young Master may be not easy to find in US but in UK there is very good letterboxed and subtitled (VHS PAL) release available. And dubbed version was released in Finland too! Yuoung master was Jackie's first film for Raymond Chow's Golden Harvest Films. Jackie started to shoot the film when the script was still unfinished. Maybe this is why the plot is not so perfect. But I find this film very enjoyable anyway. Some very excellant finghting scens with some very silly humor which both Jackie and I really love - what more could we need? Young Master may not be a classic in a way that Drunken Master is but it is very rewarding film to watch.

Score composer Frankie Chan also became an action director, director, stuntman and of course composer and more. He also directed car race action in one of the Jackie's latest films: Thunderbolt.

•The fan-fighting scene required 329 takes to complete.
