A Second Chance

A crystal floated in stars, cracked and blackened. The crack widened and finally split the crystal. A girl tumbled out.

She rubbed her eyes slowly, as if just awakening. Blearily she looked around. It was cold and bleak, drifting among those stars. Other crystals wafted in a kind of twisted garden, each filled with a person.

Grinning, she spotted another of the crystal captives. She stood and sauntered over to it. "Well, well, Jedite. I always knew you were destined for this garden. Eternal sleep, indeed." She laughed with little humor.

She flicked the crystal. It blackened, cracked, and finally split. Jedite collapsed into the vast tombs of crystal. "Jedite," said the girl. "Welcome to the land of the living."

Jedite looked around, bewildered. "I thought I would sleep forever"

"Beryl's powers have weakened and died. Her spells to hold us have vanished as well."

"I'm glad to see anyone about now. Even you, Citrine." Jedite distrustfully addressed her.

Citrine motioned with her hand at the stars. A gap filled with a lack of light formed. Quickly, images rushed to fill the blackness. "Thirtieth century Earth," Citrine calmly said. "We have slept for a long time."

"What do you have in mind?" Jedite asked.

"We must study the past, it is always the key to the future."

"How do you know what century this is?" he asked skeptically.

"I just know."

Time echoed across the plains and oceans of the Universe. The legacy of the Silver Millennium was born again in Crystal Tokyo. "It has come full circle. What was begun two millennia ago is flourishing once more," the woman said. She gracelessly shoved her glasses up her face.

Rei, complete in temple robes, glided down the stairs and into the old library. She watched as the woman pulled down an old book off the shelves, wincing slightly as the woman dropped the book onto the floor. "Are you finding what you are looking for?"

The woman jumped. "Yes," she turned to face Rei. Once more, she shoved her thick glasses up her face. "Everything is fine."

"Let the others know if you need any help. I'm going to be leaving for a while, so don't look for me. I'm sure Kendra will be happy to help you," Rei motioned to the young temple girl behind her.

"Yes. Thank you," the woman replied, a perpetual sense of nervousness about her.

Rei turned to Kendra and addressed her in low voice. "Keep an eye on her, will you? I don't quite trust her."

Kendra nodded solemnly, quite honored to be talking to the head priestess of the Fire Temple on Mars. "I will do my best."

Rei nodded and ascended the stairs. She trusted Kendra would do as she had been told. The Great Libraries, which extended under the Fire Temple, were very sacred and it was a young priestesses first job to protect them and catalogue the numerous books. All the young priestesses had a deep appreciation, and hatred, for the Great Libraries.

The woman returned to searching through the stacks. This was not an easy job. The Great Libraries were affectionately referred to as the Shelved Catacombs by the priestesses. Centuries of unfiled and unrecorded books, papers, and other things crowded all available space. The papers spilled off the tables and onto the floors and even onto the chairs.

Kendra respectfully moved a pile of faded travel brochures from a chair and sat in it. As the hours passed, Kendra's eyes began to droop. The ancient warmth of the room lulled Kendra to sleep.

"This is it!" the woman explained. "This is finally it!" She excitedly dug through an enormous mound of papers and to a book underneath. Kendra, having been rousted from her sleep, rushed over to help her, feeling partially guilty for having fallen asleep.

They shoved the papers off and the woman lovingly reached out and hugged the heavy book to her. At last, she pulled the book and away and read it's title aloud. "Sumoner's Magicks & Spells." She laughed, caressing the book cover. "Archaic spelling."

"Will you need any help translating? I've been studying my ancient languages," Kendra offered.

"Thank you. You've been most kind." The woman reached into the folds of her jacket and pulled out a sword. She glared at Kendra.

Kendra backed away from the woman. Eerily, the woman seemed to transformed before Kendra's eyes, from a nervous, fidgety woman into a cold, glaring killer. The woman advanced. "And since you've been so kind," she said coldly. "I'll let you live."

It was the biggest wedding of the year. The Princess of the Moon would marry a young doctor by the name of Rannon Claire. A big ceremony was to be held that day in the palace of NeoQueen Serenity.

The Princess had been transformed into a beautiful bride by dozens of servants. Her soft pink hair draped around her shoulders with small flowers woven in. A flowing pink dress rustled around her in quiet whispers.

Among the servants was Reenie's very own personal servant, Naomi Kallis. She was a small girl with long orange hair and big purple eyes. Something about her face gave the impression that Naomi was not quite human, an elf or a sprite come to earth.

"I can't believe today is the day!" Reenie said in a hushed voice. "It's like I've been waiting for an eternity for this very day."

"You've only got a few minutes until they play the wedding march," Naomi said as she made a few finishing touches. "Then the wait will be over."

A light tune began playing in the ballroom which had been converted into a giant assembly room for the wedding. Reenie straightened and drifted gracefully to the door. "This is it."

Naomi followed her, smiling as she left. "Go be beautiful." She stopped at the door to the ballroom, and Reenie continued in.

A fanfare announced the arrival of the Princess. The audience stood respectfully. When Reenie began the slow wedding march down the aisle, everyone resumed sitting.

White marble graced the walls and floor of the ballroom. Row after row of chairs had been arranged for the crowd to sit. The stained glass windows, usually bright with sun, glittered with stars. Hanging from the center of the ceiling, the chandelier formed the centerpiece for the painting on the ceiling.

Reenie's eyes swept the room, searching for familiar faces. She saw Mary, Princess of Mercury, and her mother, Ami. Mary's hair was a much darker blue than her mother's hair. But Mary's smile was also different from her mother's in that it did not hold the bright intelligence but a just plain friendliness.

Across the aisle, Lissa, the Princess of Venus, slumped in her chair next to her mother, Mina. Lissa was dressed completely in black as always. She hated royal affairs, but her mother had dragged her into it.

Her brother, Devon, the Prince of Earth, sat in the front a silly grin on his face. He sat next to his girlfriend, Jenny, the daughter of NeoQueen Serenity's best friend, Molly. Devon was incredibly happy for Reenie.

The Queen of Mars, dressed in priestess robes, sat silently next to her daughter, Carol. Carol and Rei were, as always, in an arguement over something. Carol had a fiery temper and a mischievous spirit.

The Princess of Jupiter, Nikki, was reading a book. Her mother, the Queen of Jupiter, saw this and elbowed her in annoyance. Nikki's favorite past time was reading.

Michelle and Erica, Queen of Neptune and Uranus, sat side by side. Their adopted children, Rachel and Katherine, sat next to them. Rachel grinned happily as she had just won her last fencing tournament a few hours before. Katherine, cooly elegant, held her head high, an expression of tasteful disdain of the overdone affair on her face.

NeoQueen Serenity stood near the front with the minister. She beamed radiantly at her daughter. Fond memories of her wedding to Darien raced through Serena's mind. She hoped Reenie's marriage would be as happy as her own.

Reenie carefully scanned the audience again as she preceded down the aisle. She had hoped Setsuna would come. But Reenie could not see her anywhere.

A part of her was sad that Helen, Queen of Saturn, could not make it. But Helen had been dead for a long time and had left no children.

Reenie reached the front of the ballroom where the priest waited to marry the two of them. As the priest began his speech, Reenie's eyes locked onto Rannon's. I love him so much, she thought.

Rannon, tall and unassuming, seemed an odd match for Reenie. But as Rannon and Reenie Began to exchange vows, the love became obvious in their relationship. NeoQueen Serenity felt a lump in her throat.

Somebody screamed. Reenie broke her gaze and looked above her. A blond man in a gray uniform hovered threateningly above.

"Sorry to break up the party," he jeered. "But I need to find the Sailor Senshi."

A mad rush to the door followed this announcement. "Doors, close!" the man ordered. The doors closed and locked shut.

"Jedite!" NeoQueen Serenity said across the ballroom.

"Jedite!" Rei repeated the cry, a strange sadness in her voice.

Jedite motioned toward the chandelier in the center of the room. The lights on it flared and began sucking energy from the panicked crowd.

"Serena!" Luna shouted as she rushed toward NeoQueen Serenity. "You must transform!"

"Eternal Moon Power!"

"Mercury Crystal Power!"

"Mars Crystal Power!"

"Jupiter Crystal Power!"

"Moon Crystal Power!"

"Neptune Planet Power!"

"Uranus Planet Power!"

"It will do you no good," Jedite said menacingly. "You will still die."

"Uranus Space Sword Blast!" The attack deflected off an invisible wall around Jedite.

The people around them began to drop from lack of energy. Jedite laughed. "With all this energy, I have gotten what I came for. May you live to see the end!" Then he disappeared.

Only one man stood in the room, aside from the Senshi. It was the young scientist, Adam Salin. In the odd silence after Jedite's departure, he stared at the people laying on the floor. "What is going on?"

Serena repeated the question, "What is going on?"

A low moan ran through the crowd. The crowd stood, blankly like zombies. "They're going to attack us," Sailor Mercury said.

"Jupiter Oak-" Sailor Jupiter began.

"Wait!" yelled Neptune. "These are people, our children! You can't attack them."

The crowd fell on the Senshi attacking viciously. Carol mindlessly attack her mother. Mars shouted to Mercury, "How can we stop them?"

Mercury dodged an attack from Mary. "I don't know!"

Naomi heard the music stop on the other side of the door. Jedite's threat, audible through the door, hung in her mind. She tried to open the door, but the doorknob wouldn't turn.

She rammed the door. This had no more effect than to severely rattle Naomi's bones. "Let me in!" she screamed in frustration.

Jupiter blocked an attack meant for Mercury. "Use your computer," Jupiter said. "I'll protect you."

"Computing," Mercury said as she worked on her computer.

Naomi used one of the decorative swords off the wall on the lock. She jabbed out the wood around the lock. In about two years, Naomi thought, I should have this door open.

Inside, Naomi heard Reenie scream.

"Rannon!" Sailor SmallMoon screamed. Across the room, Adam had attracted a large number of zombies. He had pushed Rannon into the waiting arms of a dozen zombies. They left him alone because Rannon too was a zombie.

Naomi broke the lock off the door. With a sigh of relief, she dropped the now two hundred pound sword on the ground. She pushed through the door and into the ballroom. Immediately she found herself surrounded by dozens of zombies. One grabbed her by the neck and began to strangle her.

"Stop!" shouted Adam. The zombies all dropped to the ground as suddenly as they had risen. He rushed to Naomi.

The zombies blinked blearily. Sailor SmallMoon rushed to her future husband as Rannon blinked awake. "What am I doing?" he asked.

"How did Adam stop the zombies?" Sailor Moon asked.

Sailor Uranus stared across the ballroom at Adam who was holding Naomi. "Adam controls a dark power. He shouldn't be allowed to live."

Sailor Neptune looked from Adam to Uranus. "Such a dark power is dangerous."

"Are you insane?" shouted Citrine. "Attacking the Sailor Senshi. Real intelligent."

"I am not your servant," Jedite answered.

Citrine pointed at him. One dark spear raced from her finger toward Jedite. He screamed in pain. "You are stupid. Now the Sailor Senshi know you have awakened. They will be careful. From now on you will follow my plan."

"As you wish," Jedite answered, hatred burning beneath the surface.
