In 2005, Ritsuko met Kaji Royuji and Misato Katsuragi at the University of Second Tokyo. The three developed a relationship that continued until Misato and Ritsuko became members of the Geherin, and then NERV.

Ritsuko's mother Naoko Akagi, was the chief designer of the MAGI system, and was the main reason that Ritsuko joined NERV. Her mother committed suicide in 2008. It is believed Naoko killed herself because of her relationship with Gendo Akagi.

Ritsuko Akagi lives alone. She has a close working relationship with Maya Ibuki.
