INFORMATION FOR MUSLIMS IN NEW ZEALAND, AUCKLAND History Of New Zealand Maori's were New Zealand's early settlers. Kupe, one of the great explorer first discovered New Zealand, and named it Aotearoa(Ao-taya-roa) - "land of the long white cloud". Arrival of Europeans Abel Tasman, a Dutch navigator was the first European to set eyes on New Zealand in 1642. Later in 1769 Captain James Cook claimed the country for Great Britain. On the 6 February, 1840 the Treaty of Waitangi was signed as the New Zealand's founding document, which established the country as a nation. It was signed between the Maori chiefs and representatives of the British Crown. 'Waitangi Day', i.e. the 6^th of February is considered as New Zealand's national day. People The population of New Zealand is about 3.6 million. New Zealanders share a passion for sports and the great outdoors. They love going to the beach. Many New Zealanders spend time sailing and windsurfing. "Kiwis" also love tramping, fishing, skiing and snowboarding. Amongst the many famous New Zealanders are Sir Edmund Hillary, the first climber to ascend Mt Everest; Lord Rutherford, the first to split the atom; and Jean Batten, the first woman to fly solo from England to Australia. Language English and Maori are the common and official languages of New Zealand. Environment New Zealand has been separated from other land masses over 100 million years enabling many ancient plants and animals to survive. Here we see animals and plants that exist nowhere else in the world. New Zealand is a land of unique birds. The best known is the Kiwi, New Zealand's unofficial national symbol. Government The government structure of New Zealand is based on the British parliamentary system, with a well developed economy. Wellington is the Capital of New Zealand. But Auckland is the Industrially developed city. Auckland Auckland is known as the ‘City of Sails’. It is a city of beaches, parks and a countryside dotted with old volcanic cones. Attractions: Queen Street, Auckland University, Harbour Bridge, Mt. Eden (Auckland's highest point), War Memorial Museum, Parnell Village, Paritai Drive, Mission Bay, Tamaki Water Front, Kelly Tarltons, Rose Park Gardens, Auckland Zoo, Sky City, Victoria Park Market, St.Lukes Shopping Centre and many more. Muslim History in New Zealand Muslims appear in New Zealand census from 1874. The Muslim Community in NZ are increasing day by day.. According to Mr. Ayyub Bhikoo, in 1907 Mr. Ismail Bhikoo the first Indian Muslim came to New Zealand. Later in 1930's Mr. Ismail Bhikoo's five sons came to New Zealand. In 1952 First Eid salah was performed in Mr.Suleman Bhikoo's house. In 1950's Mr.Suleman Bhikoo along with 15 other muslims formed the New Zealand Muslim Association in Auckland. Some among the 15 members are Mr.Ghulam Muhiddeen, Mr. Dosi Mia Ali Moses, Mr. Ismail Moses, Abdul Rahim Sukumia, Yusuf Ismail Bhikoo and Mr. Adulsamad Bhikoo. In the same year Islamic Centre in Hargrave Street was purchased. Apart from Muslims from Fiji there was also brothers from Albania, Bosnia and Kosova who had made important contributions during the 1950s and 1960s. In 1960 they called the first Alim Maulana Ahmad Saeed Patel to New Zealand and later they purchased a new Islamic Markaz in Pompeliar Terrace Ponsonby and the sold the Hargrave St. In 1966 International Muslim Association of New Zealand (IMAN) was formed in Wellington. In 1979 IMAN and New Zealand Muslim Association of Auckland constituted as Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand (FIANZ). The muslims are immigrants from all over the world and some are local kiwi's as well. Muslims have 2 Festivals known as Eid ul Fitr and Eid ul Adha. Nearing the Eid there is market held in Auckland where we can get prayer mats, dates, Islamic dresses, scarves, food, toys and many more things which facilitates buying for Muslims. This Eid Market is organised by the Almanar Trust. Since1999 the Eid Salat for both the festivals are organised in the parks of Auckland where there were facilities for women and children. The Islamic centers provide facility for Daily prayers, Quran classes and hifz as well. Ijtima, Qirath competitions and various other activities are organised in the Islamic Centers. Women's Islamic Confrence was organised from 9^th April 1999 to 11^th April 1999 at the Hamilton Masjid. In Auckland Dawah courses are conducted by Auckland Islamic Resource Centre.
