It can be pretty confusing what the correct spelling of Aeris' name is, especially since on all the official FFVII merchandise (such as the figurine, the posters, the wall tapestries, etc.) her name is spelled "Aerith" yet her name was spelled as "Aeris" in the demo that came with Tobal No. 1 and in the U.S. release of the game. The answer is: both are correct. The only difference is that her official American name is "Aeris" and her official Japanese name is "Aerith". Why her name was changed, I have no idea. Her name written in katakana for the Japanese version of the game can be romanized as either one. The spelling you choose to use for her name mainly depends on personal preference.
Aeris isn't alone, however. Some of the other characters who have different names are (U.S./Japan): Elena/Yrena, Tseng/Zeng, and Reno/Leno.
