Ancestors of Samuel Patterson

born 3 Oct 1867

This is the ancestry of my great-grandfather. The families are for the most part Scotch-Irish Presbyterians. They also primarily settled in Washington Co, PA, working their way west to Nebraska, and eventually to CA, where I was born. The * indicates known DAR patriots. I need to state upfront that almost none of this is my research; my mother had done quite a bit, and then I got online and found other people's research which hooked up to my mother's... My Genealogy Links page has links to all the sites that I have used to fill in this chart. I also should thank Georgeann and Curtis for the information they provided by e-mail, beyond what was on their webpages. I have put this up simply as a summary of my ancestry, gleaned from many sources!

Samuel Patterson was born 3 Oct 1867, in Rock Bluffs, Cass Co. NE. He married Rose Belle McCauley, daughter of William and Harriet (Latham) McCauley on 3 Oct 1891. She gave birth to three of his children, including my grandfather Donald S. Patterson. She died 27 July 1906, after being given an overdose of morphine for gallstones. Sam soon remarried, and Rose's kids were sent to live with relatives. My grandfather and his brother were raised by a childless aunt and uncle. Their sister Doris was raised by Sam's sister and her husband, in IL. Samuel was a banker (in 1905 he was a bank president) and was later an Auditor of the US Treasury. He died 18 Jan 1952, in Los Angeles, CA; but was buried with Rose in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Plattsmouth, Cass Co, NE.

James Madison Patterson was born 28 Sept 1836, in Washington Co, PA (three months to the day after the death of President James Madison, and obviously named for him. This was a very politically aware family.). He was married 17 Aug 1857 in PA, to Ellen (Eleanor) H. Campbell (b. 1839). He was involved in merchandising and was a bank vice-president. He was also a State Senator and a postmaster. He was a member of the Mason's and the Elk's. James M. Patterson died 26 Mar 1903, and is buried, with his wife in Plattsmouth, NE. I have a great family picture, taken in 1900 of James M. Patterson and his progeny There is also a biography of him online, which was published by Chapman Brothers, Chicago 1889, and includes a portrait and signature!

James Patterson was born 24 Apr 1798, in Washington Co., PA. 29 June 1820, he was married to Eliza Walker, who was born 22 Feb 1802. He was "a born financier", a store owner and involved in real estate. He died 17 Aug 1861, and his wife, Eliza, died 9 Dec 1886; they are both buried in the old Cross Creek Graveyard, Washington Co, PA.

Samuel B. Campbell was born in 1810 or 11, in Washington Co., PA. He married Jane McGugin, whose family was from Mt. Pleasant Twp, Washington Co. I don't have a date of their marriage, or any information on her mother. Samuel died 29 June 1890 and is buried in the Cross Creek Graveyard. Jane was born 17 Oct 1813, and died in 1900 at Mt. Prospect, PA, and is buried in the Independence Cemetery. This is a line I'd like to find out more about!

General Thomas Patterson, the third son of William Patterson, was born 1 Oct 1764, in Lancaster Co., PA. He moved to Washington Co., PA at the age of fourteen, with his family. He built a flour and grist mill, which became known as Patterson's Mills, on Cross Creek. He married Elizabeth Findley (1773-1837), of Westmoreland Co., PA, on 6 Oct 1795. He was active in politics, as a member of the Electoral College in 1816, and a member of Congress from 1817-1825. He attained the rank of Major General in the militia, and was a veteran of the War of 1812. Gen. Patterson died 17 Nov 1841, and is buried with his wife at the old graveyard of the West Middletown U.P. Church, PA.

Alexander Walker was born in Huntingdon Co. PA on 10 May 1773(or '74?) and died 8 Sept 1854. He came to Washington Co. in 1795, with his brother John. He married Elizabeth Norris in Washington Co., 26 Oct 1800. His wife was born in Washington Co, PA on 8 (or 19?) Dec 1778 and died 17 Dec 1855. They are both buried at the Cross Creek Graveyard. Alexander ran a distillery on his farm. I know very little about Elizabeth's parents, except their names, from the father's will. I would like to know more about this family.

David Campbell was born 25 Mar 1783 (or 4), in Washington Co, PA. In 1808, he married Ann Rea, who was born 9 Dec 1788 in Northampton Co., PA. It would seem that they lived for a time in Harrison Co. (and/or Belmont Co.) OH, but they are both buried at Cross Creek Graveyard, PA. Ann died on 28 Sept 1858; her epitaph is said to read "She made home happy". Her husband died shortly thereafter, on 15 Nov 1858.

David McGugin was born 7 May 1775, at Mt. Pleasant Twp. in Washington Co., PA. On 12 May 1799 or 1800, he married Jane Vincent. She was born 21 Sept 1785, in Washington Co, PA; her father MAY have been a James Vincent. David McGugin was an abolitionist, lived all his life on the family homestead, and died 2 Feb 1861. Both David and Jane are said to be buried at Mt. Prospect PA.

William Patterson was born in Lancaster Co, PA, on 14 Mar 1733. He was a farmer, and married Rosanna Scott of Cecil Co., MD (near Blue Ball) 16 Mar, 1758. She is the mother of his first five children; she died 5 Apr 1769, and is buried in the Chestnut Level Presbyterian Churchyard. William re-married, to Elizabeth Brown of Lancaster Co., PA., who bore ten children. William Patterson was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. He was a private in Capt. Thomas Whiteside's Company, Militia of Col. Thomas Porter's Battalion of Lancaster Co., mustered 13 Aug 1776. In 1778, after almost fifty years in Lancaster Co., William moved his family to Washington Co., on a 400 acre plot of land known as "Oddity". On this land, in 1794, he built a stone house to replace the original log cabin. William died 29 June 1818, and is buried in the Cross Creek graveyard.

The Hon. Wm. Findley was a well-known political figure. There's a picture online of him as a Congressman. He was involved in the Whiskey Rebellion, and wrote a book about it. William was born in Ulster, Co. Antrim, Ireland on 11 Jan 1741. He married for the first time in Ireland, but that wife died before he emmigrated. He married Elizabeth (Mary) Cochran(e) on 21 Mar 1769. She was born in Waynesboro, Franklin Co. PA. I have seen the spelling of her maiden name both with and without the 'e'. She died in 1797, and William re-married a third time. William Findley died 5 Apr 1821 (or 15 Apr. ?) and is buried in Unity, Westmoreland Co, PA., as are his last two wives.

David Walker was born in Chester Co, PA, near the Forks of the Brandywine; in 1762 his parents brought their family to the Path Valley area of Franklin Co, PA. Here he married Elizabeth Elliot, also of Franklin Co, PA. This information is new to me, and different than the Washington Co. site has. They moved to Huntingdon Co., PA in 1772 and settled near a small town called Burnt Cabins. (I have since found out that Burnt Cabins is in Fulton Co, but the two counties are adjacent, having both been formed from Bedford Co. The 1810 census for Huntingdon Co, PA, Dublin Twp. shows two of David and Elizabeth's sons, David and James Walker, and a J. Cree- who I think was their sister Elizabeth's husband. By that time, brothers Alexander and John had already moved to Washington Co, PA.)

John Campbell was born in 1744, most likely in York Co, PA. He married Mary Jane Hammond, also of York Co, (some sources say Mary; some say Jane; some say Mary Jane; same woman?) 31 Mar 1772. They moved to Washington Co. sometime between 1778 and 1780 (along with three other Campbell brothers), and built a log cabin, where they raised 10 children (9 to adulthood). John Campbell died 13 (or 15?) Aug 1807, aged 63; Mary Jane was born in 1752 and died 18 Mar 1817, aged 64. They are both buried at Cross Creek Graveyard; his mother is said to have been one of the earliest internments there, as well.

William Rea was born 13 Sept 1762, probably in Northampton Co., PA. There he met Jane Mason, born 8 Jan 1765. They were married on 24 Jan 1788, and moved to Washington Co, PA, where they raised a family of 10 children, seven of whom lived to adulthood, and had famiies of their own. William Rea spent a year as a teacher in Mt. Pleasant Twp. (Hickory), then settled on a farm which became known as the Rea Farm. He was appointed a Justice of the Peace in 1823 for a five township district. He was known as "Squire Rea". He died 28 Sept 1835, and his wife died 18 Sept 1854; they are both buried at Cross Creek Graveyard.

I know very little about Daniel McGugin, other than that he immigrated from Ireland and settled in Washington Co. in 1770. His wife's name was Anne (or Anna); she was from Valley Forge, PA. The land they settled on has been at various times considered part of both Cross Creek and Mt. Pleasant townships, but apparently ended up in Mt. Pleasant Twp. Daniel died 10 June 1787. He is buried in Buffalo Twp, as is his wife.

I got the MIDI file at the top of the page from Nathan's House of MIDI! Thanks, Nathan! It's his arrangement of "Victory", from Lord of the Dance :-)
