Aside from Clamp, I think Saitou Chiho is probably the best known current shoujo mangaka in the West. Mostly due to Utena being animated. She draws very well, her characters both male and female can probably be called seductively beautiful, bordering on the exotic. Her range is also quite vast, varying from the typical girl meets boy romance, fantasy as seen in Utena as well as historical.
Unfortunately at times, I can't help but feel the urge to slap some of her female characters. Most have the regretable tendency to be the weeping female lead, with the object of interest charging forth and digging her from what ever problem she might have at the moment. It's quite often that after buying one of her books, finding yet another replica of her streotype I ended up berating myself. In most cases, the drawing style is just too tempting for me not to read it, but ultimately the plot line tends to frustate me as well.
Her debut work was "Umi to Rukkoku chan, published in the weekly Friend in 1969. Some of her work is considered as something of a a classic. Shouji manages to capture unlovely aspect of life like rape, and sexual abuse with sympathy realistically. There's one thing that I find really irritating about her work, I hate her current style of drawing, the characters look too big and bulky and their noses looks awful unlike her earlier work.

Here's something interesting, she's still a university student, she tries to finish her submission during her off day from university. There's something about this author which makes her work that somehow touches the sentimental side of me. Her plot lines may not be all that original, but it's the delivery which makes all the difference.

She has a really unique style, very similar to Chinese caligraphy or traditional paintings adapted towards a more manga style. (Gotta love the way she draws folds and those eyelashes). It is not that surprising to know that most of her earlier works are about "old" China, though covering different time periods. From her website, looks like she might be writing somethng more western based manga, although these looks like historicals as well.
Haven't been all that prolific, and most of her books are actually a collection of short stories, but they're absolutely gorgeous!
Born on the 26 th of September, star sign Libra, blood type O. She was born in Kobe, but she's currently living in Tokyo. Very cute characters with feather like lines and light touches of colours. Her subject matter tends to be about high school students and all the problems and joy that comes from that time period. She's also a big fan of baseball, so every story tends to include something about this sport.
Status : Active in Chao Comics
Discovered her last year and couldn't get enough of her work, especially Ryo, I'll try to review that one as soon as possible. She's working at Margaret Comics right now and have one of the most beautiful drawing style, especially her character's eyes and the way she used the contrast of black and white effectively to convey a mood. You might see her name misprinted in one of her series from "Rinko" to "Pinko", something that she found rather amusing.
Status: She's still active in Margaret magazine.
