Za Margareto Za Margaretto The Margaret (Shueisha)
Monthly on the first of every month, 520 Yen or $12 Au.
Definitely more expensive than the usual magazines, but its size made up for it quite nicely, this is one bulky door stopper. One thing I really love about this magazine is the variety of complete short stories. If you're curious about who contributes to Margaret here is a way to familiarise yourself with them. Most of the artists from Margaret contributes to this magazine. Here's for people who likes to see the beginning and end of a good yarn in one sitting, if you can afford it that is :).

Melody
Title Melody
Publisher Hakusensha
Available Monthly: 16th
Price 380 Yen or $13.20 + Au
Cover illustration Tateno Makoto

It has a similar feel as Lala, but it's aimed for the slightly mature reader and therefore contains less furigana. Perhaps the most well known series in it that I know of is Sukeban Deka. Otherwise than that there is very little to differentiate this magazine with others.

Monthly on the third of every month, 420 Yen or $11 + Australia.
Kawaii!!! was my first reaction to this well known magazine, this was the mag that used to publish Sailor Moon. It's aimed at a younger target market, so girls from primary to high school. The stories they published also featured characters who are also quite young, I don't know why but I think this might explains why their stories are more magical-girl genre oriented. This particular magazine contains some very cute goodies. The cover on this issue was done by Clamp.

Princess Princess : Out on the first of every month. Akita Shoten.
This is one of the few magazine which I can actually say I like completely. The variety in style and plot is staggering. It also caters for every type of subgenre you can think about, historical, fantasy, intrigue or just plain humour. Currently the most well known work on it is Ouke no Monshu a story about a girl who is trapped in ancient Egypt. Cover is done by Midori Yukako

Princess
Title Princess Gold
Publisher Akita Shoten
Available Monthly on the 5th
Price 550 Yen last, selling for $21.23 AUD
Cover illustration Higuri Yuu

Check out the price and be prepared to faint. The ridiculous thing is that most of the other magazines are almost the same price, reasons why poor university students can’t afford them regularly.

Very similar to Princess magazine, also by the same publisher so don’t be surprised to see some cross over by the artists working for Princess. Appearance wise it’s smaller, but thicker magazine, again being rather like Princess.

Plot wise tend to concentrate on historic driven background, such as Higuri Yu’s gorgeous Kantarera and various other artists. If it were not so darned expensive I wouldn’t mind subscribing to it.

Puchi Comics Puchi Comics (Petite Comics) : Out monthly on the 24th, Shogakukan. Aimed for the older readers, no furigrana. The cover for this one is by Saito Chiho. Cost me $10.20 (Aust) for this one when it's only 380 Yen (huge sigh).

Sho-comic
Title Sho-Comi
Publisher Shogakukan
Available Bimonthly: 5th and 20th
Price 270 Yen or $7.15 Au
Cover illustration Watase Yu

Watase Yu is in it need I say more? Her current story Ayashi no Ceres is quite something, a mix between the paranormal and the mythical. it's also been awarded a prize from Shogakukan. Like Margaret the art works are mature and confindent with well developed plot. Angst comes in large doses in each story, but that's quite usual for any shoujo magazines. Fashion is well up to date, gawd I wish I'm a 2 D character sometimes.

Publisher Shogakukan
Available Monthly on the 28th
Price 370 Yen
Cover illustration Sumoto Amu

This magazine looks awfully like Sho Comic, also published by Shogakukan and some of the authors who write for Sho Comic are also present in this magazine. However, one thing I can't help notice in this magazine is its emphasis on love, you know the physical kind. I have no idea if its only in this issue, but every single story seems to end up with the characters in bed surrounded with plenty of flowers and other similar symbolism.
