Volume 2, Issue 4 The online magazine for the GeoCities Vienna neighborhood November 1999
Johann's brother, Josef, gets his due

Our Vienna site builders this issue come from Chicago in the Midwest and California in the West, and their sites are great examples of crisp, clean design bringing home the point of their focus. However you build it, it's what's in your mind's eye that counts in the end.

josef strauss
Josef Strauss
Music of Josef Strauss: "When I started my website, it was just so my friends could see my photos of Vienna. Then I got this idea that maybe I should have a website about my favorite composer: Josef Strauss."

And from there, San Diego, California, resident Donna Mitchell created an admiral site using GeoCities tools and her own imagination. The many pictures on the site show her recent trip to our namesake city's Strauss 99 festival, and she wasn't chintzy with film, either.

Vienna country home
A placid country scene near the woods outside Vienna, just one picture out of 34 rolls' worth taken this summer
"It was with a brand new camera so I wasn't sure what they would come out like! Luckily, all 34 rolls came out good."

As with all good websites, there has to be a purpose behind it. Donna's is easily stated: "I want more people to know about Josef Strauss," Donna says, adding that, "IMHO, he deserves MUCH more air play and fame than he receives. I think there are quite a few 'Strauss experts' who agree that, if it hadn't been for Josef, Johann would have faded before he got started."

Hmm, that sounds like good material for discussion. Anyone want to follow the thread in our new Vienna Online Konzerthaus Cafe?

Philip Webb
Philip Webb
Philip Web Lyric Tenor: Philip Webb is a singer whose schedule, repertoire, and career information can be found in GeoCities. A resident of the Chicago suburbs, Webb created the site to keep his friends and other professionals aware of his progress, and he has succeeded admirably.

Complete with Real Audio and WAV files, Webb says he plans to update the examples of his fine singing this December. He's also looking at using more animation, photos, and sounds, but that's the secret to keeping visitors coming to your site: Keep updating it so they know there will be something new to look at soon.

And when you have all that good information available, you want people to be able to find it. Easy-to-follow buttons, repeated on all his pages makes this site eminently navigable.

Both these sites illustrate what effect having a definite purpose can have on a site. Combine that with a design sense, some knowledge of the tools of the trade, and you have an award-winning website. Putting your site in GeoCities also gives you the resources of many community leaders, who are ready to help with any design or tool question you might have. In Vienna, simply visit Vienna/9000/blocks.html to see who is the leader in your block. If there is no one listed yet, ask one of the other leaders.
cl_kaulana is a long-time community leader who enjoys helping others realize their full website potential. He's ready to answer your questions, and looks forward to finding the next sites to write about in "Visiting Vienna."
