The Malaysian Constitution
is derived from the constitution of the Federation of Malaya which was promulgated on Merdeka Day (Independence Day), 31 August 1957 It has a bicameral parliament consisting of a Senate and a House of Representatives, Elections to the
Lower House are held every five years on the basis of universal
adult suffrage, each constituency returning one member.
The Cabinet headed by the Prime Minister consists only
of members of the legislature and is collectively
responsible to Parliament.
