Things I Learned The Hard Way :-)

Well, where to start? I made so many mistakes learning how to do this web page that sometimes I became exasperated enough to throw our shoe at Jr.'s (my pc's) face (giglgigl). (Guess what, you got it, I am still making mistakes :-) There are plenty of tutorials and HTML sites out there so I won't bore you with yet another one. These are just things I learned by trial and error that might help you avoid some problems, k?

FIRST--Copy Copy Copy. I make mistakes when I retype so I use Control C all the time. Shoot, saves me loads of time too :-)

SECOND--Don't forget them dad gum deminsion tags. They do have a purpose. They make your page load fast enough to keep people from turning your site off from the lack of patience we all suffer from :-) Yup, ..."width=xxx height=xxx border=0 alt="a description"> Berry Berry Importante :-) If your "alt" is interesting enough they may wait until the graphic loads.

THIRD--Please don't use those stupid looking "Under Construction" signs. They kinda' turn people off real swuft like :-) Heck, my page is always under construction because I am always messing around in here. That is just a given with a web page darrlin' :-)

FOURTH--Leave bunches and bunches of space on your document when you are preparing it between things so you can go back and find your mistakes. I leave at least two lines between things on my editor. The simpler it is to navigate the better it is, especially at my age :-)

FIFTH--When you create a new file, name it and save it before you do anything to it and do it frequently while making changes too. That way you will be able to find it in your index and you won't lose too much if your server goes down or the lights go off. That is a REAL bummer :-(

SIXTH--Tables and lists keep things neatly organized on your page. There are some good tips on them in my links listed below. I tried that "written out index" because I liked it. They work well on short pages but not on the longer ones. Mine ended up looking like it was a mile long. YUKCY POO!!!!

SEVENTH--A "What's New" page is vital BUT do people really check them out? Not if they are in a hurry or only have a little time on-line. Little reminders on your index/site map don't hurt sweetie pie :-) Hey, in fact they help me a lot.

EIGHTH--Please put your WebRings where they connect with what you have on your page. I saw these sites on the web that had all their Web Rings together in one place and thought it was sooooo kewl. NOT. I had to go move them to the sections where they belong so people could see why I had them. Took a whole lot of my time let me tell you :-( I mean, shoot, who wants to have to go searching all over your page to find what they came there for. (giglgigl)

NINTH--I love looking at different graphics but they take almost forever to load. So, I created sections on my page where I use the same ones for that section. (Except in my Lils' one, that is.) Besides, it makes copying the information for different pages a lot easier, and navigating too for that matter. I have the same theme throughout my whole page but use different graphics in different sections so it is more interesting. Hey, everybody likes books with pictures, right? :-)

TENTH--Those long lists of files on a persons page are neat but kinda hard to keep up with. I tried that too. I made a site map for the bottom of my pages but had to go to every page to add new files. I stopped that when my site grew to 25 pages. Can you image the time it would take me with nearly a hundred pages, not to mention space. Now I connect the page I am on to the next page in a section and provide a link back to the main index and the entrance/exit page. It is simple enough for me so I figure people of all ages can understand it.(hehehe)

Well, when I remember some more of my past headaches or run up on some more booboo's I will post them here for you too, K?

These are the sites I go check out HTML stuff on 'cause they are much better at it than I am (smiles). Besides, there are some neat color places and other things here too.
