International Web Access- The Tutorial

Step One -What is the Web?

Congratulations you just negotiated a hyperlink to another webpage

This page has a simple summary of the Web.

  • If you are new to using the Web, read this page for more information before you start.
  • If you have used the Web many times before please move to on to Step Two

You have probably heard plenty about the Internet. But what is it? It is hard to imagine but it is really just a huge HUGE disorganised network of computers that Lincoln, like many other universities, companies and individuals, has a link to. The World Wide Web is a system for accessing information on the Internet. The information available is in the form of "web pages" sitting in computers ("web servers") all around the world. A webpage author creates a webpage document and includes "hypertext links", which usually show up as coloured words in the webpage. You can use these links to move from one document to another, and from one web server to another, with amazing ease, using Netscape, one of the "Web browser" programmes. Sometimes you will move to a homepage which is like going to the front door of a group of webpages linked together. A group of webpages is called a website. It is easy to get lost and it is easy to get distracted by all the amazing creativity on the web. The web is often frustrating, often very interesting but among the chaos is some very useful information. This tutorial will help you to get the best out of it.
