Aromatherapy

Fragrances have the ability to help us relax. They can
bring you back to a moment in your childhood, to holidays, vacations,
& even your grandmother's kitchen. What magic do they seem to
possess, that opens the secret to our souls? It seems that researches
have found that sense of smell is tied into our memory. |
Why you may
ask? Well higher level cortical brain function is not needed to register
smell. Rather it is a primitive part of the brain called the limbic
system. The limbic system is the seat of your sexuality, the impulse
of attraction or aversion, our motivation, and our moods, our memory
and creativity. So it seems our subconciouness registers the scent
before we even recognize it. |
Odor
stimuli in our limbic system release neurotransmitters. Some of these
neurotransmitters are: Encephaline which reduces pain, and produces pleasant
euphoric feelings. Endorphins ( my personal favorite)that stimulate sexual
feelings, and promote a sense of well being. Serotonin which helps to relax
and calm you. Finally, noreadrenaline which acts as a stimulant.

Aromatherapy is based on these principals...by using
essential oils certain emotional and physical responses can be
obtained. This is done through the use of essential oils. Essential
oils can be diffused, applied in an oil base for a massage, put in
bath water, sun tan oil, compresses, inhalation, and aroma lamps. So
as you can see there are many applications. |
My personal
favorite is a blend of Ylang - ylang, orange and sandelwood. I am
partial to the the more citrus and earthy scents ( Now don't go
thinking I am a granola lover ...(¬¿ô). The key to
picking out the essential oil is to trust your nose, it always knows.
Don't pick an EO (essential oil) that you have a strong reaction to,
just because it is supposed to make you feel happy or reduce anxiety.
There is not just one EO that reduces
anxiety there are several; so pick the one that gives you a postive feeling. Have fun
with it. I know I have... I love to see people's reactions when they
come into my house or office. Give it a try. |
I could not
attempt to tell you all there is to know about aromatherapy, but my
purpose was to peak your interest ¬¿ô. I have also
provided you with some links to sites that do a wonderful job at
discussing aromatherapy. |
