Part Two -- The Second Shop

It was later on the Thursday morning, about 11:00, as my Alter Ego and I (most people think there's just one of us, but really there are two of us who work at one purpose in most things) went into the second dress shop.

Coming down from the emotional high left over from the first shop, but a bit down because I'd not found what I was looking for, the second shop was really a letdown. Older styles, and a somewhat abrupt salesclerk turned me off. My A E looked politely at a few dresses, asked about the sale items, thanked the woman, and left. If the shop people aren't interested in selling, what's the fun of shopping, anyway?

Part Three -- The Third Shop

The third shop advertised bridal, formal, prom and pageant dresses some at greatly reduced prices. It was to be our last stop for this expedition. Unlike the first shop, this was more open and spacious, and the dresses were grouped by colors within sizes. Right away I identified the right general area, and was beginning to look at a royal blue satin dress with lots of draping in its style. It had cap sleeves and an open top, but not too low. This was a dress that screamed for a bit of cleavage, though.

The young woman who came over to help asked all the right questions, and shortly I was in the dressing room. Again, a bit of a zipper problem arose. We decided the 12 would NOT make it -- these were formal dresses, and I learned you can't trust the sizing -- probably because they all are meant to be fitted and tailored. She zipped me up, and had me turn around. "Do you have forms? With this dress you need a pushy bra with forms. Do you have something strapless that will work, do you think?"

"I don't think so -- "

"Pick up your clothes and come with me," she said, as she opened the door, and led me from the front to the back of the store. I had only seen one customer, and two other young girls, together with an older woman I took (rightly, as it happened) to be the owner. The customer didn't appear to notice, but the staff did, with nice smiles at me and the salesgirl. "Joan shares the building, and has a bra and prosthetics shop here. The stock room is common between our shops. Let me get her for you."

A few seconds passed -- it seemed longer, but I was introduced to Joan and she looked me over closely. Joan fiddled with the fit, and decided we should try a 14 or 16 to get room in the bust. All three dresses were about the same waist size, it turned out, but the tops did vary. These dresses had been used by a dance chorus for the Miss Texas Pageant, and had been altered to fit each of the dancers. CLICK here to turn the page
