{sigh}...well, if you have read the "Pro-Life" editorial I wrote, you already know where I stand on the issue of abortion. For that reason, I will not get into that part of this issue at all at this time. If you have NOT read the first editorial, it would probably be good to read it first.
Anyway, my thoughts on the pro-choice issue are that it would be a logistical nightmare to have strict anti-abortion laws in place, as well as it being inappropriate for any governmental agency to presume the right to interfere with a woman's right to determine what happens to her body.
Any guidelines set up for when and if abortions would and would not be permitted would undoubtedly lead to situations where some individuals would be dishonest and possibly even tend to incriminate someone for a crime they may not have committed. For example, if a teenage couple were to have consensual sex and the girl became pregnant....she might claim that she was raped in order to lessen the severity of the reaction of her family. I am sure you can imagine what this might do to the boy and his family.
I do believe that it would be a violation of a woman's Constitutional rights for the government(on any level) to dictate what medical decisions she must make regarding her own body. In light of the fact that I personally consider abortion equal to murder, this might seem odd. To me, what is important is that each woman should be aware enough of herself and her biological functions to take the necessary steps not to find herself in need of an abortion. Yes, we HAVE come a long way, baby.....but some of us still refuse to be the masters of our own destiny. This is still not popular with some segments of our society. For some strange reason, a woman is considered a hard-hearted bitch if she refuses to allow others to make decisions for her, push her around, and keep her barefoot and pregnant. The days when those attitudes were even workable are gone. It's sad that there are still folks around who try to promote that kind of thinking. A woman today can be anything she wants to be and there is no reason why that HAS to include being a mother.
