Mount Cook

Mt Cook is the centerpiece of the Mt Cook National Park. It is also the highest mountain in New Zealand at 3744m. The Maori name for it is appropriately Aoraki - "cloud-piercer". The height was 3754m until a couple of million tonnes dropped off the summit in a massive landslide in 1991.

The photos on this page were taken on a bus trip around the South Island that I took in 1995 to remind myself what is down there.
