Eastern Suburbs Tennis Club

These two 40m long sandstone block retaining walls are located at the back of the Eastern Suburbs Tennis Club on Bream St in Coogee. The wall is pretty much dead vertical, and reaches up to about 4m in height, providing some nice vertical problems in addition to some long traverses. Almost all of the holds are finger-shredding crimpers, with a few pockets and seams providing some welcome variety.

The rock is very coarse, and tends to get gritty pretty quickly, so bring along a toothbrush for some cleaning. Finger tape is also recommended, since all of the problems are hard on the fingers, and very sustained.

Climbing after dark is possible here most nights, since the lights on the tennis courts light up the wall quite well. Scope out the landings in daylight beforehand, though, as the millions of dog lovers in the Eastern Suburbs use the park as a toilet for their pooches.

The wall faces due south, and has a number of trees to provide shade, but probably gets pretty hot on summer afternoons. Still, Coogee beach is only a 5 minute walk down the road, if you're feeling a tad warm.

The guide for the area is the newly published Sun, Surf and Sandstone online guide book. This crag is described here.
