The Grampians (Victoria)

An extensive area of rock somewhat similar in feel to the Blue Mountains, but without the extensive lines of buttresses and walls that so characterise the Blueys. Unlike the Blueys, however, the rock is harder and generally of better quality.

Although there is undoubtedly some fantastic climbing to be done in the Grampians, I was rather disappointed by the weather and tendency for the rock to seep. Unlike nearby Mt Arapiles, the Grampians are at quite an altitude, and hence catch the inclement weather, particularly around Hall's Gap. In addition, most of the cliffs are capped with dense vegetation, meaning that they seep for a lot longer after rain.

There are a ridiculous number of of guides to the Grampians. Unless you're a local interested in doing some of the more obscure routes, I'd recommend buying the Mentz / Tempest "Selected Climbs in the Grampians" guide. It's pricey, but for a visitor it's much better than buying the plethora of other guides to the area.
