After the success of the smaller Joker 6.7 a larger version was considered and some stretched 6.7 designs at an overall length of 7 metres were built. In the mid eighties however the first 820 was constructed and formed the prototype for subsequent 820s'. This first Joker 820 was so successful, that little in the way of modifications had to be done in development and the boat is still cruised and raced very successfully. From that first boat there are now many Joker 820's sailing in New Zealand with more under construction.
The 820 design retains all the features of the smaller 6.7 but with the bonus of much greater internal space, more headroom, a seperate toilet area and of course the feel of a much larger boat. It is still very easy to rig and launch/ retrieve by two people and is a delight to sail. It should be said that two boats have husband and wife owners who are into their seventies and spend most of the summer cruising.
