The week of July 7-11, 1997 Outpost 189 went on a 41 mile hike on the Appalachian Trail (AT). We began our journey where we left off the year before. 1996's hike ended where the AT crosses the Blue Ridge Parkway near the Punchbowl Shelter. Heading south we traversed over rugged terrain for 41 miles until we reached Jennings's Creek.

I will highlight the major events of the hike.

Day One: We arrived at our starting point and, after a short delay began hiking. At Salt Log Gap we came very close to stepping on a rattlesnake, fortunately we made a safe and quick escape, only of course after we took time to get some pictures.

Day Two: Provided a trip to Natural Bridge which is one of the seven natural wonders of the world. This was a very pleasurable experience and a lesson in history. We ended the day with a five mile hike into
