WWell it finally arrived, the first day of camp. And you know, looking back it wasn't the Hell I expected. It was a completely different kind of Hell.
I hardly slept at all last night because of my sore neck (which 3 Tylenol couldn't cure) and the storm that hit last night. I think that and the sleepless nights of the last week or so took their toll on me and caused my back to ache something fierce all day.
Breakfast was quite skimpy because we had no food so that was quite annoying. We got to the school and no one was there (it was 7:30 so go fig eh?). We unloaded the van almost completely before the first kid arrived (around 8:00 or so). Registration was hellish because we had a bunch of campers that we had missed on the class lists and a LOT of registrations from last week. I'll have to get an updated list of kids from Charles for next week's camp.
We did Opening Council (Pulse time to beat is 16:90) then off to the first workshop. Pretty much as soon as we started we knew we were in trouble. The workshops were too short (WAY WAY too short) and the kids were really bored for a while. But we did our best and made it to lunch (which Nina and I had forgotten). After lunch the mayhem continued. Nina and Laura's group (lead by Rob for two sessions) have almost 45 minutes of free time. As a quick filler we did bridges. Phil's group showed just as we were getting organized so we included them. It was a HUGE hit. They kept asking for more time to finish (we almost didn't finish the last session it went so long). After that we rushed through the last session and did a quick Closing Council. Laura and Nina did Swap while Phil and I cleaned and prepped. The kids leaving was confusing too but we should have that ironed out by tomorrow.
After we got home, Laura and I went for groceries/booze while Phil and Nina cooked. We bought food for a few days and a few supplies needed for camp.
After we ate supper we did a brainstorm of ideas to make Monday better. We should have a better one next week. We also started a quote list, where we write down stupid things people (us and the kids) say. Three quotes today.
Rob and Laura went for a walk after the session. I found a cool river and Laura wanted to see it so we walked it for a while. We discussed how we would go down in a canoe and then decided it would be cool to do in tubes.
I'm just about finished this entry today because I want to write letters to family and Jenn so I'll continue tomorrow.
