For the Safety of Your Bun, and For Your House
The definition of Bunny Proofing involves three things:
1. Keeping your rabbit safe from harm
2. Protecting your house
3. Providing safe and enjoyable chewing alternatives to chewing on
your antique furniture (aah!)
Here are the things
involved with meeting those three requirements:
These are the
biggest, and most dangerous threat to bunnies. For some reason, bunnies
find them tasty. If your bunny starts chewing on them, she can get very badly
burned or
electrocuted.
Solutions:
` 1.
Hide the Cords. Run them behind, or under
furniture or carpet.
2. Spiral Cable Wrap from Radio Shack.
It costs about $1.50 for 3 feet, and works great. It's great for cords that you
can't hide, such as vacuum cords (when they are in use), etc.You simply wrap
the cords in this spiral plastic sheath, and the buns don't want to chew on
them any more. "Perhaps
because the wrap has the effect of thickening the cords so they no longer are
bite-sized." (House Rabbit Society, Rabbit Proofing)
3. Plastic Tubing. This is
similar to those used in fish tanks. Buy them at an aquarium store or hardware
store, split them lengthwise, and tuck the cord inside.
House Plants
Most house plants are toxic.
The Solution:
1. Put the plants away from bunny's area.
2. Hang the plants up high where bunny can't reach them, but watch
for
falling leaves!
Check out the list of plants that are toxic to bunnies:
Baseboards, Furniture, and Wallpaper
You don't want them ruined! Or to eat wood they're not supposed
to!
Solutions:
1. Boards. Boards can be put over the baseboards. I
don't use this solution as it's
unattractive. I use numbers two and three, as they work just as well, if not
better, and
they don't look as bad as a board.
2. Plexiglass. Plexiglass can be
put over walls to protect wallpaper, baseboards.
3. Gates. Gates can be put up to
keep bunny away from places he shouldn't be.
