Richard Pearse
Centenary of Flight

previous  next

One of the features of the day was a parade by local schoolchildren, along Main Waitohi Road, reflecting the past century in fashion and technology. It was over by the time we got there, but we saw lots of small, wet and cold children, in costumes, scuttling back to their buses to escape the rain. Would've been quite good to see, if it hadn't rained on their parade.

This shot is of a lone cyclist carrying bamboo poles along the road. The cyclist in question is Joseph Bailey, a Timaru secondary school student, who performed the role of Pearse in a Timaru-based drama production held earlier that week. He was supposed to represent Richard Pearse going along to this workshed in order to work on his flying machine. His appearance marked the start of the actual takeoff attempt.

The red streak across the photo is marker tape to prevent the throngs crossing the road.
