The sole basis that we have at this point, on his name being
Samuel is that there is a tie between the Stocks family. Per
Dave Dunlay: "Valentine STOCKS, son of John STOCKS & Sarah
WILKINSON, married Jane BROWN, daughter of Samuel BROWN & Mary
CARR. The 1850 census for Port Huron Twp, St Clair Co shows
that Valentine had an older brother named John Jr, age 22.
Another record shows an 1854 marriage for Elizabeth BROWN &
John STOCKS. I suspect that Elizabeth was a sister to Jane and
John was a brother to Valentine. The census (1870) shows the
family of John
and Elizabeth STOCKS living next door to your Mary BROWN."
Much of this record is based on proximity of households in the
census records. More details are needed to tie up the many
loose ends that we have.

Since Mary Brown is listed only with (assumed) offspring of
Emma, John and Samuel in the census of 1870, it is assumed that
Mary's husband died prior.
