M armi and I spent almost
all our time in the French Quarter. And why not? It's
where all the action is. Most people these days criticize
the Quarter for being so "Disney-fied." Well, I
don't know about you, but I can't remember ever seeing
live sex shows as part of the attractions at Disneyland. I loved the Quarter. I loved the old buildings, the balconies adorned with intricate grillwork, even the 'thrill' of passing by Delta Burke's house. Sure, it's touristy. But, hey, I was a tourist. |
A standard view along a French Quarter street. I wish I could remember the street name! Speaking of streets, note how small and narrow this one is. They were originally designed for horse-drawn carriages, the standard mode of transportation in the 1700s. Notice the posts topped with horse heads? They are original hitching posts! As you can imagine, traffic on these streets is terrible; all one-ways packed with tourists. |
Beinville House, where Anne Rice based Lestat's and Louis' home in her vampire books. Isn't that a great balcony? Unfortunately, we didn't get to go inside. Our days were too jam-packed as it was! I've read that it's haunted (of course), though, so I'm not that keen on going in. |
A typcial sign in the Quarter. If you can't read it, it says "When New Orleans was the Capital of the Spanish Province of Louisiana 1762 - 1803 this street bore the name CALLE D BIENVILLE." Yes, the Spanish did occupy New Orleans for a time. It's part of why the city is such a hodge-podge of cultures. Well, I thought it would make a cool picture. |
What's a trip to New Orleans without a visit to an Emeril Lagasse restaurant? We managed to score reservations to his NOLA restaurant, and LOVED it! Forget any bad review you've read: the service was great, and the food superb. When basic table bread consists of jalapeno cornbread, herbed mushroom, and cinnamon raisin bread, you know you're in for a treat. I had an amazing arugula, goat cheese, pine nut, salad with a wild mushroom pie overflowing with marscapone cream cheese and sun-dried tomatoes. Our meal was completed with fried apple pie a la mode. The best meal I ever had, hands down. |
As testament to the great service, Scott, our waiter, sent us a thank-you postcard in the mail! He even directed us to the cheapest place to buy Emeril's spices in the Quarter. Overall he was very nice, and very cute, but he only had eyes for Marmi. She's hoping she can finally have her lagniappe when she sees him again! |
