The first American balloon flight was a 15 mile 46 minutes flight that took off from Philadelphia in 1793. The passenger was a small black dog and the pilot carried a personal letter of introduction from President George Washington. It was possibly the first U.S. Air Mail flight.
Hot air ballooning is based on the principal that hot air rises. Heating and cooling the air inside the balloon is what causes it to rise and descend. The basket is made of the traditional wicker. It's proper name is gondola. It supports a modern stinless steel burner that is capable of putting out at least 28 millions B.T.U.'s. When it is attached to the balloon the combined unit often stands over 90 feet high and 70 feet wide. That is why hot air balloons are called "Gentle Giants."
Hot air balloon rides are available year round in Albuquerque, New Mexico. But the most exciting time is October when balloonist come from all over the world to display the beauty and creativity of their balloons.
