Frank Stark is the father of Jim Stark. Despite that fact that he is a kind and warm-hearted man, he is a slave to his dominant wife. He is feared of going against her will. Jim does not want to be like him. He considers his father a coward. "He always wants to be my pal, you know?" Jim once said to Ray Fremick the juvenile officer, "If he had the guts to knock mom cold, then she's happy and she wouldn't bother him." Besides that, Frank is also feared of troubles and consequences. Although he loves his family, it seems like he is always doing things in the wrong ways. Jim has given him plenty of chances to stand up and fight for him. Unfortunately, he is almost always a disappointment. Not until later when he finally offers Jim the caring and security in the time of need that the tension in their relationship finally brightens up.
