Chapter 1

Sylphia's Background
The only daughter of Darmon Meidlande, an aspiring merchant, and Medea Foamswift, a well-bred lady, Sylphia is also the youngest child in the Meidlande family. She has three older brothers, the eldest being Rogan, then Tyromir, and finally Lornen, who is only a few years older than her. As a child, she loved to play outside with other children in the neighborhood, especially enjoying playing pranks on adults. She could often get away with many things for being a cute child, and also because she was the daughter of the Meidlandes, who by this time had gotten a foothold in Ambridge society and also in the shipping trade. One of the victims of her many pranks was the house cook, since Sylphia had quite a sweet tooth and would hatch preposterous plans to get her hands on Cook's strawberry tarts.

As she grew older, however, her parents became more strict and she soon found herself taking lessons in subjects such as music, penmanship, and etiquette. She also had many tutors to help learn how to properly manage a household. No longer did she have the freedom to run through the town as she had before, Sylphia now found that she was restricted behind walls, underneath thick layers of petticoats and dresses. She grew more serious, and also more solitary, although she learned how to socialize and hold polite conversations.

Even her brother Lornen, who used to be her partner in crime in many of her younger escapades, grew older and also more distant. Although she could still talk to him easily, he was usually out of town or busy in his study, so she found less opportunities to spend time with him. As such, she withdrew, and turned to music to release her stress and worries. She took up several instruments, including the flute, the lyre, and the violin. Sylphia also enjoyed singing, although this was something she was more embarrassed about and usually only did when no one was listening.

On her fifteenth birthday, her parents had a birthday surprise for her - an engagement to Javren Coulter, the son of another well-to-do merchant family in Ambridge. The marriage would take place in two years, when Javren was 26 and she would be 17. Somewhat resigned to her fate as a society wife, Sylphia has asked her parents for a vacation, to take time off and see the Empire before she is to settle down permanently. As such, she has arrived in Alleria, hoping to learn more about the lands, and also about herself...
