Richard Lee joined the 94th. Fighter Squadron in late June of 1943 and left in May of 1944 after having flown 51 missions. Upon returning to the U.S. he was assigned as a P-38 flight instructr at Van Nuys Army Air Base, California.

During his career with the USAAF he was awarded the Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, The Air Medal with 12 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Presidential Unit Citation with One Cluster.

In September, 1945 he left the service and became a pilot with TWA, where he remained for 36 years, retiring in 1981. As a pilot for TWA he flew the DC-3 and 4, Martin 202 and 404, five different models of the Lockheed Constellation, the Boeing 707. 727 and L1011. He is a lifetime member of the American Fighter Aces Assoc.
