1. What are Floral Remedies?

In 1930, Dr Bach, a Harley Street consultant, gave up his practice to concentrate on following an age old therapy that addressed the emotional aspect of disease - the making of Floral Remedies or Flower Essences. Since Dr Bach's time, there has been a massive influx of essences from around the world - and each essence addresses a unique emotion-related aspect of life on earth.

These essences, when combined with some remarkable stories, lend further confirmation to the schools of thought (such as hypnotherapy) that emphasize that if you balance out an emotionally-charged event (situation), any physical hurt (such as a tennis elbow or a 'RSI') will 'disappear'. This can give the perception that flower essences are a cure. But, .. FLOWER ESSENCES IN-THEMSELVES ARE NOT CURES for physical ailments! For example: a flower essence cannot cure a damaged nerve; but it may help with dealing (or coping) with the frustration (anger) (and/or distress) that can occur after an accident which culminated in restricted mobility. By reducing this distress, the body can reduce the likelihood of further potential damage, in forms such as psychosomatic diseases and/or developing impairments related to decision making and/or problem solving; of which the latter are correlated with long-term duress.

IN SUMMARY
The aims of the Flower essences are to reduce the impact of stressful situations upon a person (or animal), and/or reduce the intensity of a reaction to a specific situation. This allows one (human or animal) to maintain his/her integrity and a sense of control over his/her behaviour, without becoming addicted to some other medications, or participating in substance abuse.

2. How do Floral Remedies work?

There are three (3) aspects to consider when discussing how Floral Remedies work. 1.Fluid Dynamics, 2. Kirlian Photography and 3. the degree of impact.

1. Fluid Dynamics

In the 1920’s, a researcher, Dr Henri Coanda (the father of fluid dynamics) discovered that water flowing over an object, tends to ‘cling’ to it in much the same way as a spider clings to a twig, or a sloth to a branch. This was called the ‘Coanda effect’. But, Dr Coanda’s work went further where, when studying snowflakes, he found that a direct relationship between snowflake duration (the length of time before the water, contained within the snowflake, congealed) and the length of life between those who drank such water.

These discoveries also influenced his protogé, Dr Patrick Flanaghan.

In the late 1980’s, Dr Patrick Flanaghan, when working on the ‘living-energizing’ facets of Hunza water, discovered vital aspects that produce ‘energized’ water. For example: .... to be completed shortly....

(Tompkins & Bird (1989), pages 99-127)

2. Kirlian Photography

More than 20 years ago, the advent of Kirlian Photography heralded a potential scientific tool for measuring the electro-magnetic field (aura) in human subjects. Unfortunately, there were technical difficulties that prevented the use of this discovery because the results were unreliable when one came to repeat an experimental design.

Since then, these technical problems have been solved thus allowing experiments to be repeated. Also, further developments in the computer industry allows machines such as the Kirlian photography to be linked up, thereby allowing time-phase experiments to be undertaken. This is invaluable when assessing the ‘efficiency’ and practicality of preparations such as homoeopathics and Floral Remedies. An example of this can be seen in the picture below where Kirlian Photography has been used to illustrate the difference in the electro-magnetic field (aura) of a person after application of the remedy.

3. Degree of Impact

Floral Remedies come in three degrees of impact. (i) the Mother tincture which is the strongest and forms the base from which the two other preparations are derived: stock and dose. The Stock preparation is the ‘stronger’ and tends to have a more profound impact when treating certain conditions such as shock. The Dose preparation is ‘weaker’ and is more often employed when people are doing personal development work and/or ‘moving through difficult times’.

Personal development work (or moving through difficult times) is a process – that is: you cannot reach the end of the process then deal with the issues or, in other words, you cannot run before you can walk. Therefore, people who use these remedies or ‘essences’, have found that the remedies ‘move’ in the same direction as the individual – helping that person to uncover the ‘blocks’ that can be causing frustration. But the impact can vary depending upon the individual and the situation and the ‘dose’ – stock or dose. In both cases, the impact can be subtle (hardly noticeable) to profound (sudden change in attitude and/or thinking). Therefore, when ordering the product, stronger does not mean that a frustrating situation is ‘going to be instantaneously removed’ because one is using a stronger preparation such as ‘stock’.

Another aspect in the stock versus ‘dose’ preparations is that practitioners tend to use the stock to make up ‘dose’ bottles for their clients. It allows them more flexibility to make the dose a ‘little stronger or weaker’ for the individual. An example is when practitioners, competent in the use of machines like the ‘Vega machine’ can adjust the dose to the individual to help achieve the desired result.

3. FTS Remedy for animals

FRIGHT, SHOCK AND TRAUMA (FTS) REMEDY
The FTS rememdy is a combination of Seashell and Australian Bushflower essences.

HOW TO APPLY THE ESSENCE
The essence can be placed on the tongue, on the skin (such as the back of the neck), in the animal's feed, water container; or if its bathtime, in the water used for rinsing. Flower essences can also be added to lotions.

If it is not possible to get near the animal, (perhaps it has fallen in a pit, out of your reach), attempt to get the drops within a 3-6 inch radius from the animal's body (smaller animals = 3inches). The essences will still work as they also affect the electromagnetic field or aura thereby helping to minimize the effects of shock.

The main thing to remember is that most Flower essences have an alcohol base, so if you apply it to broken skin, it will cause pain.

WHEN TO APPLY THE ESSENCE
You can apply the remedy every 15 minutes in emergency situations; such as ... while waiting for Veterinary attention. As the essence will not contradict any Veterinary procedure, it is safe to use even when animals have been involved in car accidents and are lacerated or have broken bones. Just remember, do not put it on broken skin.

If it is not an emergency, whenever it is needed.

COMBINING ANIMAL BEHAVIOUR MODIFICATION AND USING FTS -
an example:

If an animal has had a fright, say a puppy was trodden on by another large dog at a dog show, the chances are that the puppy will be non-specifically conditioned (become anxious and/or fearful; in some instances may become aggressive, or become sick/off-colour) to the pre-show preparation (which may include travelling to the show). Of course, once you arrive at the showgrounds, there are the associated noises, smells and architectural design where the incident occurred.

How to use.
1/ As soon as it is possible, organize one or two friends with well-behaved dogs, which have also had experience with puppies, to meet at a nearby park.

2/ One hour before you start to prepare to go to the park (but pack as if you were going to a show), apply 1-4 drops of FTS to the back of the puppy's neck.

3/ 15 minutes before you start to prepare, apply another 1-4 drops.

4/ Start to prepare as if you were going to go to the show; keeping any 'small-talk' in a light, happy voice. if the puppy becomes anxious, aply 1-4 drops to the back of the neck, reassuring the puppy with lots of pats.

5/ As you are about to put the puppy into the car/dog trailer, apply another 1-4 drops.

6/ Upon arriving at the park, apply another 1-4 drops.

7/ Allow the puppy to explore the area. Talk to the puppy, whenever you feel the need, in a light and happy voice.

8/ Introduce the puppy to the older dogs. Praise your puppy for good behaviour. (This cannot be emphasized enough. Praise, praise and more praise). Let the dogs play under supervision.

9/ As you prepare to go home, if you feel that the puppy needs more drops, apply now.

10/ Repeat 1-9 as many times as possible, at different parks, or other not-too crowded venues, before the next show.

The most important thing to remebe is that your behaviour needs to be consistant. It is useless to praise the dog for a specific behaviour, to turn around and yell at him (or her). (See ambivalent behaviour: Animal Behaviour Problems - side link or at the bottom of the page).

If you are unsure of the type of behaviours you can expect a puppy to perform, spending some time at any of the following classes can be an advantage:

1/ Puppy socialization classes - some veterinarians hold these classes for their clients.

2/ Dog obedience classes (check how they reprimand a dog for misbehaving - if it makes you question their ability, find another school).

3/ Local library - there sre some very informative videos available. If they are not at your library, see if an interlibrary loan is possible. (e.g. videos by Barbara Wodehouse)

4. Other combination remedies for animals

SEPARATION ESSENCE
This essence is a combination of the Australian Bushflower and Western Australian Wildflower essences. It is wonderful to use on infant animals that are to be separated from his/her Mother and go to a new home/family; or the infant has lost its mother as can happen in a road accident.

It can also be used for any animal that dislikes relocating to a new residence (even with owner in tow).

GRIEF
(Australian Bushflower essences, and Seashell essences)
Whilst depression has been used to describe some animals behaviour, there are no (to the best of my knowlege) comparative academic articles that compare a species such as a primate with depression and a human; or dogs and humans. In other areas, such as Cushing's disease, post traumatic stress disorder, yes there are many articles.

Yet, there are stories, indicating that 1/ some companion animals are profoundly affected by the loss of a family member (animal and/or human); and/or 2/ the animal has worked with a 'special' human, and displayed signs and/or symptoms of loss (grief) at the time of the humans's death or the cessation of employment.

BARKING DOG REMEDY
This treatment option is worth considering if your dog is barking too much for no apparent reason; that is; the dog is not bored; there is no other animal taunting him/her - such as possums in the trees, or the children next door are not exciting the dog by running sticks along the fence etc). Its aim is to reduce the amount of time spent barking, or barking at nothing.

Whilst the above is not to say that in some situations, one may need to use a citronella collar (the dog receives a spray of citronella when it barks) as well; or some other animal behaviour modification procedure, the essence can reduce the amount of time spent barking through to the time required to use behaviour modification procedures to achieve the desired result.

When the essence went beyond success.
In one instance when this option was considered, the owner had been constantly running outside to tell the dogs to be quiet. Upon admineristering the 'drops', the owner then had to continue running to the door to make sure that the dogs hadn't escaped: it had become too-ooo quiet!

'DIGGING UP THE GARDEN' ('D.U.G.') REMEDY
This essence addresses the emotional aspect of boredom. On the physical level, the owner(s)of the affected dog need to provide lots more exercise and stimulation in the dog's life, if this essence is to be a success.

REMEDY FOR FEAR
(Australian Bushflower essence)
This essence is used in the treatment of fear associated with frights and/or shock. If an animal shows both fear and aggression together, this essence WILL NOT reduce aggressive behaviours per se. This is because some types of aggression are associated with brain dysfunction and/or brain damage. Therefore, an assessment of the type(s) of aggressive behaviours need to be performed first, before undertaking a treatment regime. (This also applies to any Natural Therapies/Natural remedies.) Your Veterinarian and/or Animal behaviourist can perform an assessment for you.
