Echidna
The echidna or Spiny Anteater is a Monotreme. It is a mammal that lays eggs. The quills are modified hairs that are hollow.
Its food is termites or ants. Like the platypus, it has no teeth. The sticky tongue flicks out at a rate of 100 times per minute.
When the female is ready to lay, she contracts her stomach muscles to make a pouch. After 17 days the egg is laid.
The baby has an egg tooth to break out of the egg.
The milk seeps through pores. The baby suckles for about 55 days until the quills begin to grow and the mother ejects the baby.
When danger threatens. the echidna buries itself to prtect the soft underside.
