Remote Australia
Hot water flows through this Artesian Bore from hundreds of metres deep. The hot water flows along several kilometres of channels until it is cool enough for the animals to drink.
The Dingo Fence
The longest fence in the world
By the 1880's,thousands of sheep were grazing the arid areas of South Australia, New South Wales, and Queensland. Fencing was non-existent so flocks of sheep were yarded at night to keep the losses from dingoes at a tolerable level. Rabbits entered the Corner Country in the mid 1880's so the Queensland Government decided to fence its southern and western boundaries. The fence was well maintained for several years, but was unable to control the rabbits which were in plague proportions. Dingo numbers built up so in the 1920's the fence was rebuilt to control dingoes.
The fence starts at Ceduna in South Australia and follows an erratic course to the New South Wales border. It runs north into Queensland and now terminates near Dalby (Toowoomba area) with a total distance now of 5131 km. Originally the Queensland section had an additional 3400 km but this part is no longer maintained. The fence is approximately 3 times the length of the Great Wall of China.

Noccundra Hotel
The first hotel at Noccundra was built in 1870. The present hotel was built in 1920. The stone was quarried from Mt Poole near Depot Glen (Malparinka). The hotel also sells fuel. Population is four. The Wilson River is across the road.
Mirage
What appears to be a lake is actually a mirage caused by heat waves. This photo was taken in mid-winter, so mirages occur all year round.
Birdsville is in the far south west of Queensland, about 1500 kilometres west of Brisbane
