Boo’s Blades – Development

After a long hiatus from the sporting world, the UNP Fencing Club was resurrected 3 years ago by Toby Marthews and James Dominy. From those first 5 members, the club has continued to improve and show a growth in membership.

We currently have 14 members in the club and are actively looking for more. To achieve our aim of having 15 ‘tournament attending’ fencers by the year 2003/2004, we have put into plan an intensive Development Program.

The Program consists of holding weekly fencing exhibitions on the UNP Library Lawns to draw the attention of students to the sport. They get to see club members ‘hack & slash’ at each other before giving it a try themselves.

We also participate in the Open Day demonstrations for Grade 11 and 12 learners. It was due to the success of the Open Day outings that we decided to open our membership to high school students. It is our hope that through these students, we can cultivate the fencing potential of Natal and eventually become a major player in the fencing community. This move is intended to increase the level of experience of younger fencers (who previously could only start fencing at University), and make them more competitive at the various tournaments and Opens held throughout the year.

We are, as always trying to find sponsors for the club, and if you feel you would like to help us or receive more information, please send us an email with ‘UNPFC Sponsorship’ in the subject line.
