Congratulations to David Lombard and also to Alex and David Shute for making the cut to the DE’s. Well done to all of Boo’s Beginners who took part in their first tournament! Things can only get better from here…

Next up was the NATAL OPEN held in the Student’s Hall (UND) on 26th/27th May 2001.

Jude Govender, Alex Harding and David Shute carried Boo’s Honour to the tournament.

Unfortunately, we did not record the pool and DE results; however, all three of us now have National Ranking from having participated in the Open!

Jude: 60th in Foil, 84th in Epee.

Alex: 62nd in Foil, 78th in Epee and 22nd in Sabre.

David: 57th in Men’s Foil, 89th in Men’s Epee, 28th in Junior Foil and 28th in Junior Epee.

During the first week of the July vacation was the SASSU Tournament held (again) in Durban at the Old Mutual Sports Hall. Four members of Boo’s Blades competed in this eye-opening event. Some of the results:

Sarah Watt: 16th in Ladies Foil and 8th in Ladies Sabre.

James Dominy: 16th in Men’s Foil and 8th in Men’s Sabre.

Jude Govender: 17th in Men’s Foil and 11th in Men’s Sabre.

Francis Parker: 16th in Men’s Epee.

UNP Men’s Team placed 5th in both Foil and Sabre but did not take part in the Team Epee competition.

We lost all Team foil matches, however, there were some sterling individual performances. The Sabre match was a closely contested bout between UNP and UND. Although we got off to a good start, we eventually lost 45-39.

The Blades did land some of the ‘Alternative Awards’ of which we are very proud:

The “Green Stick” Award (for the hardest hits!) was awarded to us by unanimous decision based on the unique fencing style of the UNP club, with contributions from all four fencers.

The “Compass” Award was given this year to UNP for finally finding their way to the SASSU tournament.

To all the friends we made at the tournament: we had a great time, and look forward to seeing you at next year’s SASSU tournament at UCT!

Thanks to Pralini Moodley who (although she couldn’t fence) was happy to drive us to Durban and back!

On the 25th and 26th of August, three members of the club travelled to TFS for the NORTHERN GAUTENG OPEN. Although we didn’t perform as well as we had hoped, we still had a great time with old and new friends.

James Dominy: 8th in Sabre

Jude Govender: 9th in Sabre

David Shute: 16th in Junior Epee and 17th in Men’s Epee

Watch for highlights from the tournament on the CRAZe show on e-TV in 2 weeks time!

The Annual Natal University INTERVARSITY COMPETITION was held on the 15th September in Pietermaritzburg. Due to the size of the teams involved and the limited time allocated to the Competition, a modified Team system was used where each member of a team fenced all opposing fencers and the winning Institution chosen based on the cumulative indices of the fencers.

For the Foil competition, is was agreed that Bonnie Parker should be given a +2 point handicap as the only female fencer in the pool.

Congratulations to Durban for winning the Foil and Epee disciplines and the overall competition.

However, in our favour, it must be said that the results show a vast improvement in the PMB team over the past two years (most especially in foil!)

The Sabre competition was based on a similar system but with 3 fencers per University. Victory was given to the first team to reach 5 victories. There was one match unfenced after victory was decided, and was recorded as 4 points each.

UNP finally got revenge by winning the hard fought Sabre competition. There were superb performances all round but the day belonged to Boo’s Blades!

Based on their performance in previous Opens and the Intervarsity competition, Jude Govender and James Dominy have been called up to represent Natal in the Sabre event at Team Nationals. Congratulations to you both and good luck for Bloem!

It was a long drive for 11 fencers from UNP and UND to the Free State Open and Team Nationals in Bloemfontein. But our spirits were high and we eagerly awaited the tournament.

Jude Govender, James Dominy and David Shute represented Boo’s Blades, with Jude and James also being part of the Natal Sabre Team.

None of the UNP fencers made it to the Elimination stages of the individual disciplines but it was a successful outing for the Natal Teams, with the Men’s team placing 4th in all three events and the Ladies taking Bronze medals in the Foil and Epee divisions.

No one expects the Natal Fencers to win…!

Our chief weapon is surprise! Surprise and beer –

Our two chief weapons are surprise, beer and suicidal tendencies –

Our three chief weapons are surprise, beer, suicidal tendencies and

an almost fanatical devotion to our team –

Amongst our weaponry are such diverse elements as surprise, beer,

suicidal tendencies, an almost fanatical devotion to our team,

and noise!

Thanks to the Naval Hill Backpackers for an amazing stay! You guys rock!
