Mythology

In Roman mythology, Neptune was the older brother of Jupiter and the god of the sea (the planet Neptune got its name from the fact that when it was seen through a telescope, its disc appeared bluish-green in color). He is the Roman counterpart to the Greek god Poseidon. In mythology, Neptune is often depicted carrying a trident, a three-pronged spear which has become an alternate symbol for the planet Neptune. Naturally, he was the most important god to the ancient mariners and seafarers, and it is said that he first introduced the horse to man.
