Champions of Krynn

Background

Ansalon is recovering from the War of the Lance and Raistlin's attempt to become a god. In the aftermath of these conflicts, the Whitestone Army drove the evil dragonarmies from their mountainous central homeland. Unfortunately, the Army dissolved after these victories and the Solamnic Knighs were left to administer the badlands. The Knights built three outposts, and a fortress was built around Gargath Tower as the regional headquarters. It seemed that the Knights finally brought peace to the badlands.

One day, the Council of Knights received a message from a soldier serving at the outpost near Throtl, on the border with Solamnia. It was sent without the permission of the commandant and it mentioned ominous things. Communication between the outposts had ceased. Patrols were not returning, and dragons were being sighted. Worst, the commandant was not taking these things seriously. The soldier requested that a knight be sent to investigate and inspect the outposts. The Council decided to sent Sir Karl Gaardsen, an old veteran of the War of the Lance. Sir Karl in turn brought together a team of inexperienced adventurers to assist with his investigation.

You play the members of the team and you start the game at the 1st outpost. Buy Ring Mail and Shields for any warriors and clerics, Leather Armor for thieves and mage/thieves, and none for single-class mages. If you have a kender, just get him a Hoopak as a weapon. For others, get Long Swords and Short Bows (and arrows) for warriors and thieves, Maces and Staff-slings for clerics, and Quarterstaffs and darts for single-class mages. Knights start with stuff, so just get bows and arrows for them.

My team consisted of a Human Crown Knight, Silvanesti Ranger/Majere Cleric, Hill Dwarf Ranger/Reorx Cleric, Qualinesti Fighter/Red Mage, Silvanesti Mishakal Cleric/White Mage, and a Kender Thief/Kiri-Jolith Cleric.

Go to the inn and memorize spells. Sir Karl says Throtl was the capital of the hobgoblins and you should just expect those humanoids. When you leave town you meet a caravan that has been sacked by draconians! Kill them, and the last one, an aurak steals a book and escapes. When you return to the outpost and go the the Commandant, you witness Sir Karl killing the commandant and exposing him as a sivak draconian! Sir Karl then sends you to find a patrol led by Caramon Majere, a Hero of the Lance in Throtl Keep.

Throtl Keep

Go to Throtl, just NE of the outpost. It is supposed to be abandoned, but as soon as you enter you are attacked by evil forces. Kill the welcoming committee and explore. Going north from the entrance you meet a survivor of the patrol who has gone nuts (not a good sign). At (1,11) kill baddies and get a Shield +1 and a potion of healing. There are scrolls at (3,7) and (5,7) which have invisibility, mirror image, haste for reds and ray of enfeeblement, dispel magic, protection from evil 10' for white mages. There's a treasure room at (13,15). A soldier will meet you at (4,0). Don't let him join and kill him and his friends. Then meet the kender at (2,3) and the knight at (2,6) and let them join. The knight tells you about Maya, Karl's girlfriend. Find Caramon chained up at (6,11) and then Maya arrives. Caramon orders you to kill the cleric at (2,15) to get the key to the temple, and he and the others escape with Maya. Do that, and then go to (12,9) and walk thru a wall to enter the temple.

Inside, make a right to (8,7) and kill baddies. Kill more at (15,2) and at (15,7) threaten the cleric. You'll learn that the aurak at the massacre was Myrtani, and the book he stole describes how to corrupt good dragon eggs and make draconians! Also, he's at Gargath Tower, looking for its secret treasure. Go to the center of the temple and watch the clerics blow themselves up in the corruption ritual. Kill the survivors and get a Flail +1 and a potion. Chase the draconians to the NW, kill some of them and get the potion and arrows +1. Continue to the catacombs.

This is pretty much a one-way road. Just walk and kill things in your way. At one place you'll get a Hoopak +1, Bracers of defense AC6, and a Wand of ice storm. Continue and you'll reach a room which has a glint of metal. Search and you'll find Chain Mail +1. Don't search any more rooms. You'll then fight thru an ambush hidden by an illusion of lights. When you get to the red cave-like place, go south- first walking in the middle of the cave, and then hugging the left wall. Fight more dudes and eventually you'll meet two white dragons. It seems that the hobgoblins were working for a small detachment of the White Dragonarmy. After killing them, attack the remaining hobgoblins and they'll surrender. Exit thru the door ahead.

Gargath Keep

When you return, Sir Karl will send you to the 2nd outpost between Gargath and Jelek. Everything's ok there, and he tells you that the Castellan of Gargath has a Dragonlance. When you go there you discover that the Black Dragonarmy has already taken over with the help of dark elves. Kill the guards and walk into the keep. You'll meet a member of Gargath Resistance. Follow him and do whatever he says. Go to the building at (13,6) and kill the baddies to get Plate Mail +1 and Gauntlets of Ogre Power. Then go to (8,7), kill the draconians, and walk thru the wall. The way to go from there is N, N, E, E, E, N, N, N, W, W, N, W, W, N, W, W, W, mostly thru secret doors and involving fights. Before that, explore the NE area and fight snakes, undead, and a cleric to get money.

This Tower used to hold the legendary Graygem, the stone that brought chaos to Krynn. Now it's being run by a lot of evil jerks. On Floor 1 go to all the rooms and kill everyone. In the room at the eastern hall you'll get money. Go up to Floor 2, and go thru the small room. Two doors ahead on your right will reveal the Castellan, who's now a loony prisoner of Myrtani. He'll tell you where the Dragonlance is hidden. Go left to the room with many doors, and find another prisoner, then go up again. Go south on Floor 3 and then west, and go thru a door after the staircase to fight undead, then go up. Explore Floor 4 and meet humans who want to gamble. Kill them, take their money, and discover that the dice are loaded. Also find some baddies who yield a red scroll with slow, dimension door, fear and a white scroll with fumble, minor globe of invulnerability, hold person. Skip Floor 5. On Floor 6 find the treasure room west of the door, and the Dragonlance is gone! Take the Long Sword +1, +4 vs reptiles (a handy substitute for the Dragonlance) and the cursed Two-handed Sword +2, Berserker (which you can sell). Then go thru the north door and Myrtani will run up the stairs with the Dragonlance. Chase him and kill his buddies. At the top he'll escape on a red dragon, and 3 black dragons will fight you. Kill them, and walk all the way down and back to the outpost.

Jelek

Sir Karl will send you to investigate the town of Jelek, and privately he asks you to find a silver rose. At the entrance you meet guards who explain that the dragonarmies have not seized Jelek thanks to their new leader Sir Lebaum. They also state the laws for travelers which are you 1) gotta have an escort and you 2) can't go to the graveyard. An elf named Skyla escorts you and asks you to go to a certain place. Instead, explore around, and you'll discover that this place sells better stuff than the outposts. Buy Composite Long Bows at the weapon shop. The white scrolls at the magic shop have ray of enfeeblement, dispel magic, hold person, (1st) protection from evil 10', protection from normal missiles, charm monsters (2nd). The red scrolls have invisibility, mirror image, strength, (1st) knock, haste, invisibility 10' (2nd). After buying stuff go to the graveyard, and fight past Skyla's ambush. Mysellia, a thief in Jelek Resistance will help, and afterwards recruit her. She says that Sir Lebaum runs things through Skyla and they took over the town a few weeks ago. Nobody has ever seen Lebaum because his office is in the graveyard. At Lebaum's office at (11,7) discover that he's in alliance with Myrtani. Then go to (2,2) and get the silver rose, and fight 3 black dragons. In the building kill or turn the undead, and find a Wand of Fireballs, Protection Scroll vs Dragon Breath, and the Periapt of Protection vs Poison. The next door exits the town, and Mysellia leaves.

Sir Dargaard's Tomb

Sir Dargaard was a Knight who kicked evil butt before the Cataclysm with his Girdle of Giant Strength. He was buried near Godshome with his soldiers and gear, and now Sir Karl wants you to recover the girdle before the dragonarmies do. The tomb is NW of the 2nd outpost, and have a knight in your party. Once there, go north and give Life or Money when asked (do NOT give items!). Next, you are told to take one of two swords. Take the one on the right and continue. Then give the sword to the soldier in need, and you pass the Test of Honor. Go back to the stairs and go east. Have your knight go thru the fire rings. He is healed instead of hurt at the third one, and you pass the Test of Fear. Return to the stairs and go west. Do NOT take any weapons, jewels, or money in the treasuries. Continue and fight four skeletal knights. Then fight mobats and rats. The last fight is with 4 undead dragons. You then pass the Test of Battle. Go south and have your knight answer all the questions. Then you'll find Dargaard's gear which includes a Long Sword +2 and 6 suits of Solamnic Plate with the girdle. Take only enough armor for any knights in your party. Equip the gear in your party and fight draconians on your way out.

Renegade Ogre's Base

Myrtani has fled and regrouped at Kernen, capital city of the ogres. Some ogres like Gravnak didn't go along and established a base NE of the 2nd outpost. Go there and be nice to any ogre you meet. Enter the first building you see and agree to work with the old ogre. Then enter the keep. Walk around the SE area and search the two rooms. You'll find (1) 8000 stl with Myrtani's engraving and 2) evidence of a plot against Gravnak. Go to the center of the keep and tell Gravnak all about the plot. Then help kill the evil ogres and the draconian assassins. Make friends with Gravnak, and return to the outpost.

3rd Outpost

No one's heard from this place, so check it out when Sir Karl tells you to. The first thing that's wrong with this place is you go to a dungeon screen instead of an outpost menu when you enter. You meet the commandant and he says everything's cool. Go to the inn and go to a room, and meet a former member of the guard. Talk to him, and discover that the Green Dragonarmy has taken over. Walk around the commandant's building and avoid any fighting. Find the secret door thru the back and open one of the doors. Discover that the evil forces have captured the guards' children. Leave and walk into the alley between the inn and the tavern. Kill the baddies, and walk straight thru the door ahead. Kill the baddies there too, and hide the children. Go back to the jail, and free the guards. Then walk thru the north door and first eavesdrop, then kill the 'commandant' sivak and his friends. Run thru the north door and meet the REAL leader, Jadefang, the green dragon! Kill him and his troops and don't forget to take the Mace of Disruption. The real commandant will appear and give you a potion, a red scroll with invisibility, mirror image, blink and a white scroll with dispel magic, hold person, protection from evil 10'. Return to the outpost.

Neraka

Neraka was the location of the temple to the Queen of Darkness. It was a neutral zone where all the Dragon Highlords could meet and it was the center of the evil powers. At the end of the War of the Lance it was brought to ruins and abandoned. However, the infamous subterranean Death Chambers survived the War and its Prison Lord still keeps slaves there with the support of the Green Dragonarmy. Here or at an earlier point the 2nd outpost has been attacked by auraks and Sir Karl was taken prisoner. Avoid meeting the new commandant until you've beaten all the previous missions. Go see the new commandant and Maya will ask you to accompany her to Neraka. The first door to the south is the entrance to the secret base, but if you want you can wander the ruins and even fight a green dragon. When you fight you'll discover that Maya is a silver dragon (that was pretty obvious to begin with). Explore until you discover the stairs, and you'll see Sir Karl dying. He tells you to rescue the slaves below and he dies, at which point Maya takes his body and leaves. Go down the stairs.

You're now in the Death Chambers. From the main hall go thru the first door on your right and rescue all the prisoners being tortured for a LOT of experience. After all the rooms have been visited, exit to the main hall and take the next door to your left. In one of the cells is a note from Sir Karl and the rose you gave him. Return to the main hall and take the next door to your left, killing draconians and moving on. You'll meet the wuss Tanis Half-Elven. He tells you to continue and free the prisoners from all the cells. Do that and meet him in the SE corner. Then return to the main hall and take the next door to your right. Kill Prison Lord and his buds and get a Long Sword +2, Shield +1, a red scroll with dimension door and a white scroll with fire shield, protection from evil, ray of enfeeblement. You'll discover that Prison Lord has been supplying bodies for Sir Lebaum. Exit thru the next door and fight green dragons to your west and you'll get the emerald. Find stairs to the NW and escape. Return to the outpost.

Sanction

Whereas Neraka was Takhisis's temple and the spiritual center, Sanction was the base of operations for the dragonarmies and their main port city. Go to Sanction, and meet and interrogate 3 thieves on your way to the inn. The inn is to your south, and in the north room kill the elvish mage and his friends. You'll get random magic items. Then go to the Thieves' Guild connected to the same building. Kill the fighters and find the Necklace of Missiles and a Bracers of AC4. Head to the docks and watch some minotaurs take a woman into a warehouse. Follow them in, kill them, and rescue the woman. Meet her in the southernmost dock and she'll give you an amulet. Go to (8,9) and enter the Temple of Huerzyd.

Take the third door to your left and search the next room for a red scroll with slow, dimension door, fear and a white scroll with protection from normal missiles, fumble, remove curse. Go into the main temple with the statues of good gods. Find random magic items in Paladine's statue and also in one of the rooms. Go to (11,8) and find more stuff. Then go to the room at the end of the NE hall and kill draconians. A Shadowperson will appear and then go to (14,4) and enter the tunnels. Go thru and fight mobats and mo' mobats. There's a room where you can rest, and you also get 3 random items from the Ancient Revered Father. Then go to the Temple of Duerghast.

By now you've discovered Myrtani's plan. He has taken command of the leaderless Black, Green, and Red Dragonarmies, infiltrated the outposts to avoid suspicion, got the book to make draconians, is working with Sir Lebaum to make undead soldiers, and at the right time the Knights will invade Sanction and be completely surprised by the numerous bad guys. In Duerghast, go thru the left door and rescue the guy. Then go thru the right door and fight Skyla's men. Continue to a room with many doors, and take the one to the right. Kill the draconians at the end and get a Ring of Protection +2,the Cloak of Displacement, and the Dragonlance. Return to the room and take the southern door, and take the stairs. Go thru the next rooms until you reach a large room, and take the first door to your left. Kill Skyla, and go to the room beyond to find Plate Mail +1, Shield +2, Long Sword +3, and a Mace +2. Go back, go through the southern door, and walk thru a door that brings you back to the docks. Go back thru the entrance and go to Duerghast to return (now you can go between Sanction and Duerghast). Walk west towards the arch, kill the blue dragons, get the sapphire and redeem the silver dragon eggs. So, a unit from the Blue Dragonarmy is working in Sanction! Head north, then go west up the stairs, and find Sir Lebaum in a room. He's a death knight! A death knight here with the Blue Dragonarmy definitely implies that Lord Soth is involved. Kill him and get a Two-handed Sword +3, wand of lightning, and a wand of paralyzation. Go back down, go south, kill the baddies, and fly to the floating citadels with Tasslehoff Burrfoot.

First go into the north tower and go east up the stairs. At the top Tas will enlarge and use the wind captain's chair to collide with the other citadel. At the 2nd citadel, run NE to the stairs and go down. Go south thru the doors and kill baddies hiding in front of a door. Go thru to get magic items. Go back thru the door and head left to stairs. Go along, kill guards, and take their uniforms. Continue and red dragons will then take you to Kernen.

Kernen

Kernen is occupied by the Red Dragonarmy. A training hall is at (6,13). Get the crown at (14,7) and give it to the dragon at (3,11). Meet ogres at (0,4) and elsewhere. Meet humans at (14,12) and (14,2) and tell them to revolt. Go to 2 draconian barracks at (10,14) and (5,11) and talk, then burn them down. Go to the gates and kill the scant guard. Then rest before entering the keep.

Draconians attack upon entering, and attack again at the 2nd door. Go east and search to find the locked book, the lab to make the salve, and the key. Go back and go west. Get past the Guardian and go south. Kill the guards and then the Dragon Master to get a Long Sword +1, Shield +1, and Plate Mail +1. Don't take the passage, but go back to the central room and go north to the treasure room. FIRST take the Gauntlets of Ogre Power and the Two-handed Sword +2, equip them, and THEN take as much money as you can. Go to the dragon master's room and take the passage. Meet and kill Myrtani and his guards, and get his Ring of Protection +3. Tas will heal you, then you fight 3 big-ass Red Dragons, and get the ruby. You win!

As a reward, the Knights take away all the strong magic items and weapons you found in the game, including the Dragonlance! Then Lord Soth makes an appearance and threatens you. What a victory. :(

Tips

1. Stinking cloud is GOOD- if it doesn't immobilize baddies, it worsens AC. It works against draconians and even dragons!

2. Treasure is mostly useless in this game, but find it to get XP

3. Early in the game, upgrade your armor from your wussy Ring Mail to Scale Mail, Chain Mail, and Plate before you find magic armor

4. Have two weapons just in case a Baaz takes one in death

5. Follow this walkthru in order. COK is a very linear game- you can't fight Neraka or Sanction in the beginning of the game at low level.

6. If you play this game by itself, keep your knight at Sword rank. With DKK, upgrade to Rose so you can command NPCs.

7. I went thru a lot of trouble detailing the big fights you get into- the least you can do is cast corresponding protective spells to deal with the correct threat.

Unsolved Questions

What do the special gems- diamond, emerald, sapphire, ruby (any more gems?)- do? They do not radiate magic and IDing doesn't reveal anything. They're worth a lot of money but you lose them all when the Knights confiscate your arsenal at the end of the game. Finally, whereas you find all the other taken goods (such as the Mace of Disruption and Girdle of Giant Strength) in the sequel DKK, you do not find the gems ever again.
