Lem was 5 years old when his father sold all his land
and equipment and moved to Hermiston, Oregon. Lem
also vaguely remembers living in Almagorda, New Mexico,
although not too sure of the timeframe. He remembers
riding back to Virginia on the Union Pacific passenger
train. His father bought 550 hives of bees and the
family then moved to Whiteville, North Carolina, and
several years later to Plymouth on the Ronoke River.
Lem graduated from Chadborn high school although he
really lived in Whiteville and entered Wake Forest
college in 1931. That year that the family in Whiteville
lost everything to a fire. Lem washed dishes for about 90
students three times a day at the old Wake Forest Hotel
for his board of $12 a month and performed janitoral
work and collected laundry for his room rent of $4 a
month.
Lem's second year of college was at Guilford where he
stayed with his great uncle, Enoch Stamey, a medical
doctor. Lem was notified of his appointment to the US
Naval Academy in 1934 but had already made plans to marry
which he did.
Lem ran a gas station for a while and then went to
work for his in-laws on the Columbus County News. Lem
was elected mayor of Chadbourn, serving three terms.
He was one of the youngest if not the youngest mayors
in North Carolina. When his in-laws sold their newpaper,
Lem resigned and bought the McDowell News in Marion, SC.
At one time Lem owned five small weekly newspapgers. He
loved to fish and play golf. He bought lots at Hilton
Head, SC, and built a house there but always kept a home
in Marion, SC, where he had owned and published "The Star"
for 30 years (1944-1974). He received many civic awards for
his public service including the National Junior Chamber
of Commerce Award for Public Service.
Evelyn kept a gracious and friendly home. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Marion Garden Club and the S.C. Jazz Society. Her health
was never good after Lem's death. She is interred in the Rose Hill Cemetery.
Lem and Evelyn's children are:
