the cage

    Late Summer, 1992:

    BRILLIANT!

The first star Trek and one of the best, the very best.

Cast/Characters: Jeff Hunter and Susan Oliver are great. All of the cast works a treat. The characters work too. Pike is well sketched out for us. So are Boyce and Number One, plus the cute young Yeoman. In fact, she's my favourite character in this. Rand is a poor substitute for her. On while we're on the subject of replacements versus originals: Hunters no Shatner, but he is good.

Writing: The plot is well put together. The story has a message in it: when the dream becomes everything, you give up living. The closing scene of Vina is very touching. The moments of humour are genuinely funny. Genuinely warm. The situation inside the cage is interesting, very. At the latter stages when Pike has a blonde, brunette and redhead to choose from it becomes even more interesting.

FX: When one first sees the stars floating by, one begins to laugh, but the more we see that scene, the more one likes it. Over, the effects are excellent. Great aliens, for instance.

More Info: Had this been bought, the ST would have gone into production and gone to air in Jan 1965. It did not.
