the conscience of the king |

November 19th 1992:
WHAT A GOOD EPISODE.
This one features Kirk's first love affair (TV running order). It uses a basic "B" plot and raises it up to great heights.
My favourite scenes are: (1) Kirk, Spock and McCoy get together after Kirk is confronted. It is uniquely Star Trek. (2) The scene where it looks as if Riley will be killed. This long, tense scene had me on the edge of my seat. Because I was so delighted to see Riley again, I was terrified for him. He was a hit (with me) in The Naked Time and I actually cared about his fate here. I rooted for him to live. In fact, I hope he appears in future episodes (It is great not to know.). I like him not because he is Irish, but because he is a very likeable character à la Kirk, Spock, McCoy and Scott.
This story raises some very interesting questions about Justice versus Revenge. It also provides a wealth of character depth for Jim Kirk. His actions are very interesting. Spock and McCoy are also explored.
The identity of the killer would probably have surprised me, had I not remembered it from years ago.
The episode maintains a genuine sense of "Is he Konos?" for a long time. Something to be commended.
It is also excellent when Konos realises that his daughter is tainted.
Overall: An absorbing, engrossing pleasure.
GRADE: B+
